Will Minetest come to iOS?

by SAMIAMNOT » Sun Oct 26, 2014 19:55

Will Minetest ever come to iOS? I have no qualms about using Freeworld or any other Minetest clone. I just want something official, yknow?

Apple isn't very supportive of FOSS.

It is $100 or £100 a year for a dev licence.

Well then how did games like Freeworld come out? And also, I don't think its just 100. You have to pay like fifty bux for the software. Who wants to do THAT, right?

Will Minetest come to iOS?

Short answer: No.

Longer answer:
Forget it! Knowing Apple’s track record and knowing some past similar cases, it is extremely unlikely that Minetest will come to iOS.
Minetest is licensed under the GPLv2+. But the terms of service of Apple’s App Store are inherently incompatible with this license, because it imposes legal restrictions. Either Minetest would have to toss away its license, or Apple has to toss away their restrictions.

Here is an old case:
An iPhone port of GNU Go is currently being distributed through Apple's App Store. However, this distribution is not in compliance with the GNU GPL. The primary problem is that Apple imposes numerous legal restrictions on use and distribution of GNU Go through the iTunes Store Terms of Service, which is forbidden by section 6 of GPLv2. So today we have written to Apple and asked them to come into compliance. We would be happy to see Apple distribute these programs under the GPL's terms, but unfortunately, it seems much more likely that they'll simply make the problem go away by removing GNU Go from the App Store.

(Unfortunately, instead of amending their terms of service to work with the GNU GPL, Apple have decided to remove GNU Go from the App Store. Please read our follow up report)

(Source)

Besides GNU Go, another software was pulled from the app store was VLC Media Player, which is perhaps a more popular example. (In other news)

Apple’s policy seems to be, either you obey our terms of service (which clash with the GPLv2+), or your app gets thrown out. Simple as that.

Actually, I am a very big Apple fan. I just dont like to see restrictions like this chain people down. With the lift of a finger they can remove any old app from the store. Sure that comes in handy when there was that app where you could buy a digital gem for a few thousand dollars while Burn Money thrives in the Play Store. But sriously! Software makers should be able to retain their liscence.
I just thought "couldnt you just post a download link to the iOS version?" but I think 1) It might not run on the latest iOS 2) you will probably still have to pay to download the Xcode software.

I will never, never, never buy anything from Apple ever, ever, ever again. That is so wrong on so many levels, but that's the whole point of this world's system, right?

Hmmm. You all raise valid points. But Apple makes better hardware than anyone else, you gotta admit. A brand new Windows 8 PC bit the dust abruptly after THREE MONTHS!!! Investigation proved it was a faulty air filter that allowed a dust particle to touch the head. SERIOUSLY. Meanwhile our first Mac, a 2008 MacBook only died when I accidentaly poured orange juice on it.
Also, is it generally frowned upon to get one of those clones?

Microsoft doesn't make PCs, at least not at the moment. What manufacturer did you buy from? That's what you should compare. I've had a Compaq since 2007, which came with w7, and it still works fine.

Ruben: We got an ASUS laptop from Best Buy.
Addi: I do believe the quality of any brand of tblets is great. In fact I was telling my mom she should get a cheap tablet since they also never fail. Unless its your fault...;)
I guess hardware issues are only a case-by-case basis. Loke Bendgate was.

Hey, it looks like Mozilla is creating an OS that will be even opener than Android!

Older news. It is to be sold on bright blue and orange phones, so you can't miss it.

Also, it is more open, not opener. English is weird...
