I had the same idea some time ago, but failed coding it.
You can use the textures I've done for my mod, if you credit me:

His textures are 32x32 :D

And the size doesn't matter.

The mod should take painting pictures from an external folder (for example, mod/pictures) and add a border to them, so that every user could add something he likes.

Maybe make it without need to edit image? So, lua just loads all pictures from external folder and creates many nodes.
Also there could be somelanguage-script to add borders to pictures.

+1, maybe even without borders (or maybe make a painting consist of 2 nodes: picture and a fixed border).

This can be added as "feature", that can be configured from server config.
And keep in mind that a lot of nodes will create overhead on player login.

The paintings mod is bugged on the latest version! This is what happens when you put a painting on the wall:

Please someone fix it!

This looks like a great mod! Haven't tried it yet, but nothing I can object to otherwise. I hope it will be included as part of default soon.

I have found some images on the web and resized them to 64 by 64.
Source:
http://opengameart.org/content/oil-painting-landscapes (CC0)
http://opengameart.org/content/30-authentic-medieval-or-least-old-paintings (CC0 in most countries)
Resized:
http://stevenw.nl/c55/paintings.zip (9 pictures)
Shall I add borders and use indexed colors?
We must be careful not to clone Notches mistakes.
