am do you have mesa drivers installed :). depending on your distribution (presuming you are running Linux) the package is called different :) In fedora it is "mesa-libGL"

if it isn't from the texture pack ( and it won't be if you haven't installed one :) ) pls tell us what your OS + how you got irrlicht and what version it is :) (also any other kind of information like version of libpng (as the textures are pngs) may prove important :))

ok just to clarify
option 2 and 3(self replication) are meant with a restriction - like you dont have trees next to another tree but atleast 3-4 cubes away (so it looks natural ) It never was meant like tree on one spot and a tree on the next cube and then another on the other one and so on.

ah, have you cutted down a tree? cause it isnt realistic at all too :). Actually the water is more realistic :)
It works and it's faster (AFAIK) though I would like bucket to make waterfalls from my big tower (currently WIP)
