Upgraded to 4GB of RAM, so I upgraded (L)ubuntu 14.04 to the 64 bit version.
I selected the older version 304 Nvidia driver, instead of version 340 that was installed originally in the 32 bit version.
Not sure why, but THIS ELIMINATED THE PROBLEM.
('Tested' the game for over a month to be sure...)

Been having this problem too... exactly at described. Suddenly I'm 'nowhere' : inf, [etc, etc], falling... It respawned me at spawn after a few seconds of that, so I learned to use the inventory home button for my home and '/sethome' to save my position every time I was 'far away'... Problem solved....
