I normally create a new user for the minetest server, and run it manually using minetest --server --worldname .... Then all worlds, mods etc. are stored in /home/minetestuser/.minetest/. You can buy a raspberry pi 3 as server and host it at home. Maybe look at my work-in-progress guide:

Ok thank you, I didn't new the big differences between mods and dektop applications, but now I read a bit about Debian pakaging, and I now know how much work has to be done. Maybe I try to do a bit of the packaging work.

Ok, just meant if they are under a Creative Commons license or something else, which most people on the forum use, but if you allow other people to use it, if the give a link, its also good. I asked, because we (Minetest TNG developers) look for a few ambiance sound tracks.

I think a server don't needs to be soo good. I ran some on a 10 years old pc. This works if there are not more than 5 players, but most old pc need too much energy, so using a raspi 3 could work for you, if you dont have a good pc for that.

I forgot: run apt-get upgrade. But do not abort this process which runs now! @HybridDog I don't now which version if Mint he uses. If its LMDE this is the best way, because it works on every Debian distribution.

Install the Minetest version wich is provied by Linux Mint is easy: open your package mangement (for example synaptic) and search for minetest. Or install it using a terminal: open a terminal like xterm and run "sudo apt-get install minetest" then tipp your password and answer all question...
