Re: A plea for direction.

That's a bit rough isn't it? It's very, very rough. I think the times I think about minetest are correlated with the times I'm in a certain mood (boredom, frustration, thinking about failure...) which makes me resent the game more than it deserves, so I'm probably super biased. With that in mind, I...

Re: A plea for direction.

I agree with everything you said. As far as I am aware, Minetest is an horrible failure at any decent goal I could imagine for it. If it really is the best open-source game there is to find, then the open-source game making community sucks (as far as I'm aware, this isn't true). I think the best thi...

Re: [Game] Pixture

I think the main issue is that Minetest lacks coherence. It's not anything that a well-made subgame couldn't tackle, but none so far have as much content as Minecraft with as much coherence as Minecraft does. Ever since I read this, I wondered how long it would take for someone to achieve what c55 ...

Minetest isn't exactly Youtube-friendly, especially when compared to Minecraft. The sound design in particular is pretty horrible.

Re: [My Opinion] Pros and cons of Minetest

I am somewhat amused by the unending debates about whether or not mobs should be added to the game. It's like if someone were making an arcade FLOSS multiplayer FPS, with only melee weapons and grenades implemented yet, and people were debating "Hey, should we consider adding guns to the game ?...

Re: [My Opinion] Pros and cons of Minetest

You do know that MineCraft is now owned by MicroSoft right? As far as giving them money in the hopes that you are supporting development... If history is any indicator, you will never see another update to MineCraft nor will you ever see a MineCraft2. If the game is not an XBox exclusive MicroSoft ...

Re: The little things from a newcomer perspective.

Yeah, nudity is annoying. Also, giant penis-shaped buildings. Those really annoy me. Players should either have a permanent construction permit or need to have a mod watching over them at all time before placing any node. Also, players placing signs should only be allowed to use words that are withi...

Re: Above-ground dungeons?

I don't really have experience making video game stories, so don't quote me on this, but I'm 99% sure that's the wrong way to make a story for a minetest game. The story of a game should be built and tweaked at the same time as it's gameplay and its technical aspects. Making a finished game designed...

Re: [Website] Security alert from Avast

We can't work out why this happens, it's not fetching from inchra.net anymore. This may be a dumb question, but have you made a computer search for the strings "inchra", "inchra.net", "amun", "piwik.js", etc... in the website's files ? You might have forgot t...

Re: [Website] Security alert from Avast

Thread bump.

I'm a bit surprised this hasn't been fixed yet. "The game's website triggers an antivirus alert every time you open one of its pages" is kind of a big deal, and a good way to repel potential new players.

Re: What's Minetest still missing over Minecraft?

I've never tried to make a mod with it so I can't speak from experience, but almost every serious Minecraft mod uses it now. If there are things you can't do in it (aside from make an open-source game), I'm not aware of them. I've seen mods which do everything from creating portals which accurately...

Re: Above-ground dungeons?

I have to say, I agree with paramat, the dungeons add to Minetest's character and origanalism...in my opinion at least. You don't need bugs to make a game original. Actually, you don't even need to actually try to make it original, especially if doing so detracts from the game's quality. The proces...

Re: What's Minetest still missing over Minecraft?

4aiman : My information comes from reading the code source (in the master branch of the github repository). It's either accurate or, at worst, recently outdated. As for the Valve comparison, Minetest is similar to Valve games in that you can do basically everything with the tools they've given you, ...

Re: What's Minetest still missing over Minecraft?

Getting back to the problem of subgames being mostly minecraft clones, I think one of the main reason this problem exists is the structure of the game itself. Minetest basically takes the Valve approach to making an engine : what the developers want is hard-coded in, with a few tools and options to ...

[Website] Security alert from Avast

I'm on Windows 7 and I use the Avast antivirus software. My main browser is firefox, but I seem to have the same problems with chrome. Whenever I open minetest.net (but not forum.minetest.net ), Avast pops-up, makes an alert sound, tells me "A menace has been detected", and vaguely explain...

Re: What's Minetest still missing over Minecraft?

Spending XP helps to balance that. Enchanting artificially lowers the amount of XP by letting ppl trade their XP for the buff they need. Moreover, spending ANY kind of XP for enchantment brings even more balance - even some farmer will be able to gain a good armour and weapon to protect him/her sel...

Re: Are we prepared for potential Microsoft harassment?

Generally people don't act by pure nastiness. When someone makes something bad, there is almost always a reason. Money is one of the main reasons. Sure. Re: What's Minetest still missing over Minecraft?

First of all, I've been playing MC and MT since almost the begginig of both. So it is hard to see anything "original" in both of them, when those are based on other games (infiniminer, dwarf fortress) and have such a basic concept like, life itself. [...] https://forum.minetest.net/viewto...

Re: What's Minetest still missing over Minecraft?

Minetest is missing a lot of things, and has a lot of problems that won't be fixed by making a todo-list and dumping in to the developers. I'm not that familiar with the community and the game itself, but from my peripheral view of it, I notice two big problems : - The subgames are too similar. Basi...

Re: Did minetest get better than minecraft? comment your opi

I'm often torn between amusement and despair when I see people endlessly repeating that Minetest is better that Minecraft because making mods is 'easier'. No, it's not. Or, to be more precise, while making a shitty mod is infinitely easier in Minetest, making a great mod is slightly easier in Minecr...

Re: Proposal to improve Minetest’s horrible controls

My take on the problem : In minecraft-type games, there are two classes of buttons : those triggering an 'aimed action' (punching, placing blocks, anything that requires aiming), and those triggering a 'free action' (jumping, sneaking, etc). Intuitively, all the aimed buttons should be on the mouse...

Others have said it, I'll say it again because it should be repeated more : you are a one-man reason for minetest to exist. To bad you seem to be the only one :(

Still, it's inspiring. I intend to work on minetest and I can only hope to be as awesome as you.
