You are clicking the items right? you won't pickup the items just by walking over/near them, you have to right (or left can't remember) click them to pick them up.

Unfortunately yes, until the server owners update there servers to the newest version or turn off strict protocol checking. Yeah I have 0.4.1 too, so not sure, however the doors are really bugged out on mine, I don't get the display issue just usability issue and a few other things on single player, I filed an issue in github about that though (https://github.com/celeron55/minetest/issues/174)

This isn't a bug in the game, it sounds more like a trackpad driver issue or a faulty trackpad.

I can use Minetest perfectly fine with both mouse and trackpad, have you made sure you have the latest drivers for your laptops trackpad?

The hash character (#) indicates a comment, so if you comment out a setting in your minetest.conf the game will fall back to using the default setting set within the engine. ^_^

There was a patch on the patchsets page for 0.3 which added this and it worked great on my system and a few other peoples but it didn't get merged upstream as It killed performance on older hardware (at least I think thats why celeron didn't merge it)

Yeah 0.4 worlds are not backwards compatible with 0.3 as the world data was changed quite a bit in 0.4

You will have to start a new world if you want to play on 0.3.1
