Great Idea. It will be fine to generate realistic terrain with rivers etcetera from heightmap of real terrain. I will watch progress here :-)

It will be fine, but OpenGL is horribly slow on my computer, regardless minetest version.

But as a bonus I get some access violation with direct3d in 4.1.

@xyz: CPU unknown, old probably.

After googling the error code and bit of playing with Dependency walker solution found: It was missing msvcr100.dll

When I placed this dll to the same folder as minetest.exe everything worked right.

Minetest 0.4 and 0.4.1 throws me strange bug: http://i.imgur.com/XhmXI.png (There is written ,,Application initialization failed (0xcc0000022). You will stop it (application) by pressing OK ) The newest minetest which works me is that from 2012-03-26. Operating system: Windows XP Locales: cs_CZ

I dont use 0.4 because of some strange bug (access violation or some of that kind).

I am thinking abou changing the recipe.

About texture, if somebody make better texture, I will include it with pleasure.

Building long road in minetest is bit tedious. Firstly you need to dig a ditch, then fill it with cobble. So I made this mod which gives you asphalt block. Asphalt is placed like rail - only on the surface (it's faster). Asphalt is also very cheap. From one rat and three gravel block you have got 15...

Minetest crafting recipes database

I have one idea: If the creating of new block types is only calling a lua function, why not create fake minetest environment. Instead of registering nodes for game it will save it to database. And later we will have fully automatic crafting recipes database derived from mods.

Great! I really like your mod. I will probably make a fork (mainly for better graphics), so I have one question: Where to place code-modification to support concepts of turnouts/rairoad switchs? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railroad_switch This would be real advance in transport in minetest.
