group isn't a mod. It is precisely what is written - a group of similar items which could come from different mods (ex. default:wood belongs to the group:wood).

Basically it means, that you can use any type of wood from any mod in order to craft workbench.

I think that Simple Mobs Redo https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=9917 makes it unnecessary.

I think opposite - we should add ghosts to [mobs] redo ;) And maybe other flying creatures.

I my opinion You could add both models and add an option in config file for choosing bed model... In case when there is no proper texture in texturepack, the defald one would be used, I'm right?

But I would have another request - autofarming -> for example a machine which would "dig" plants like player does and another which would plant the seeds? With mese sandtube prom pipeworks mod it would be a nice combination :)
