I think we may jast add to all solid nodes black posteffect an small. Without client modify it be works normal.
edit: damage on this nodes sometimes leads to a server crash or don't work (v20120106-01, ubuntu). bug??

I know, this trick complitely don't solve problem, don't have premissions and so on, but it realistic and may be used on 0.4 servers right now without any server modifications

Nope. Now its only decoration for smoke demonstartion. I dont know how it may be used, and not planning do anything with it.

like in Haven & Hearth, hearthfire - bonfire, there spawn and respawn player. It show player name and change color if player online. Appears at start with the player in a random location
