This is a mostly frozen copy of the Minetest forums through 2017. If you know phpBB3 and would like to host any G-rated forum here, you can email: me@minetest.org
If the email doesn't work, find out who's taken over Final Minetest from OldCoder and email them to get write access or an admin account.
I should have set this up years ago. But it's no tale of woe.
Whether the temperature is high or low, regardless of cold winds blow,
away we go like Edgar Allan Poe, on now with the show. BTW rhymes are welcome.
That link shows us that even the project creator doesn't really have any direction for Minetest. There are a lot of "I don't know"s and "I don't have an answer"s in his posts.
*Disclaimer: I don't necessarily believe what is written below It could be possible that one or some of the core Minetest contributors are plants and/or compensated by competition in order to disrupt the Minetest project. With the goal of sabotaging critical features in the name of design direction...
Reading IRC, it seems to me the opposite is true. RBA is apparently the only one who knows what this game needs and everyone just fights him 100% of the way.
Welcome to the forums, SamCinnamon. The Minetest developers are generally not also writers or musicians or modelers. If you want to see music, animals and game art the onus is on you to create, submit and promote it. Other than that, there is royalty free music and assets. I like your idea of humano...
What is it you want to start? Just getting into the game in general? In order to have a game that feels fully-featured, you will need to build-your-own with Minetest by adding mods. Some immediate benefits you will notice switching from MC to Minetest: - Map height far above Minecraft's limit of 256...
Neat, RealBadAngel is working on a similar implementation and when he asks to review it in IRC he will get a royal beatdown for "excluding old hardware" or "not aligning with the goals of Minetest".
My reference point for such blocks is the mod Christmas Craft which has quite nice craftable items, that don't need much resources, apart from the few kilobyte of recipes and texture. That's indeed a very nice, enjoyable mod. Unwrapping a present - or giving a present to someone - is very entertain...
Have a look through dev IRC history for hints of release. Very often the date is not concrete, 0.4.13 got pushed back twice I believe. Though it would be nice if they announced target dates to the community.
A quick look at CPUWorld will tell us that PIII Katmai processors were introduced in 1999. Other hardware in the franken system I threw together may be older or newer.
You guys weren't kidding when you said Minetest supports old hardware. I just fired up 0.4.10 on a nineties era desktop system. It ran, barely, but it works. The machine in question: 450Mhz Pentium III Katmai 256MB PC133 SDRAM GeForce3 TI 200 30GB PATA HDD lubuntu I'm impressed at development's devo...
I think Mintest is viewed as just a clone of Minecraft that is free no matter how much you update Mintest it will always be viewed as just a free Minecraft clone because if you just put the right texture pack in and added some new features it can be nearly indistinguishable from Minecraft other tha...
Ooh, these are really good. I hope they get merged. Ingar, do you live in an area that gets snow? I'm not sure if it would be easy to replicate but snow steps really should have a muffled sound of snow compressing underneath your feet. This is the best example I could find.
It seems that almost everyone is here because of the freedom and opportunity. I guess I should also share my reasons. For me there is no single, significant feature that sparked my interest but instead a bunch of little things. 1. I have always hosted a vanilla (see: no mods!) Minecraft server for f...
What reasons do you all individually have which attracted you to Minetest? Is it the fact that Minetest is free (gratis orlibre)? Do you enjoy watching games grow from alphas into fully featured releases? Migrated from Minecraft for political or technical reasons?
I was reading the irc log and saw a quick mention of it and then they go on to discuss things that matter. Your comment before stated "Devs are busy doing, then re-doing, then discussing various innoticeable changes and then scrapping them". If you read through the whole page you can see ...
The second screenshot looks good. I sometimes fly around just to get the ocean floor covered. Can this be added at least as an option to the game? probably not, or at least not before 7 years down the road. Devs are busy doing, then re-doing, then discussing various innoticeable changes and then sc...
This is free software, it's not a restaurant but more of a buffet. lol More like a soup kitchen. I would like to address the notion that Minetest != Minecraft. Everyone tip toes around the idea that (heaven forbid) Minetest resembles Minecraft. Just look at it. http://fedoramagazine.org/wp-content/...
One of the biggest things that needs to be fixed first is the inventory lag. Minetest cannot be considered "ready to ship" until that gets fixed, at minimum.
