The Minimap

by everamzah » Sat Jan 09, 2016 11:14

Image

Just how much extra processing does the Minimap put on the server? If no one is using it, does it still add overhead?

(rubenwardy: I didn't quite understand, but I think you were saying that the client only renders the image, so the server does all the work?) viewtopic.php?f=10&t=13125&p=204021#p204021

This is entirely client-side (fortunately) and running in its own separate thread.

For reference:

rubenwardy wrote:I'm not sure, but I don't think it works like that. The only way extra load would create is through requesting more mapblocks to be sent, however that is not possible as the client doesn't have the means to request more mapblocks, the server has control over sending them. All the rendering is done on the client.

Unless you're talking about some lua mod.

The minimap is entirely client side. It also works with old servers.

It shows cavities under ground. For example, the image in OP is of an underground tunnel network. Air shows up as a shade of green, whereas solids show up as black.
