How to set up a local server and connect to it

by ad_roo_cs_teacher » Wed Jul 06, 2016 07:07

Hi all,

I am getting really angry with the fact that I can't play MineTest with my girlfriend using our WiFi in our home. We are using MAC at home and I'm finding it hard to access each others worlds. I have turned off all the firewalls on both our MAC's and home router but still nothing. Can somebody please give me an idiots guide to create a LAN for home use only.

I am a teacher of Computer Science also and when I get it working at home, I can set it up in college for my students play also on a LAN.

Cheers

If the server/hoster runs on OS X (mac), then simply get your network internal IP-Address: Tutorial
After you got it, share the IP with the client (other computer) to connect to the server. The client also needs the correct port, which is 30000 by default.

When playing within an internal network (router) is it not required to destroy the complete firewall. Only unlock the UDP port for your server on the hoster's computer. (Windows asks you automatically for that permission, no idea about mac..)

I have tried putting the IP address into the address part with the port being 30000 but it keeps saying Connection has timed out? How can this be fixed?

Are you sure that it's the correct IP and port? Ping the host computer from your client send, this way you will see if they can communicate.

This setup here works perfectly:
