I don't know if it is possible or not, but you could try to make your 0.3.x Minetest client work with the Minetest version of the server below, darkrose.

Couple of new things added, jungle trees can be grown from saplings now, just plant the sapling on top of a jungletree block:

And large trees now grow at random, these require more free space around them before they'll grow from a sapling, but they'll also generate in mapgen:
