Looks like the server went down while I was out today. It has been updated and restarted.

Skin installed, but I need you and Terranova to sign on once first so I can grant interact.

Awesome, I'd like to build something epic. Say a cathedral, floating in the sky. Building in a portion that'll likely never be used, such as the water above 100, 20, -650

Feel free to build anything you want (in good taste of course), and pretty much wherever you want as long as it doesn't encroach onto someone else's structure. That cathedral in the sky seems fine to me, though you'll probably want to build a road+path from there to the main highway. :-)

Pixel art and other-game-related stuff should be limited to Art Ave (north end of the map off of North St.) and surrounding areas.

My guess is that obsidian comes from technic. If not, it might come from obsidian.

obsidian is either from technic or gloopblocks, depending on which of the two you picked from the inventory.

Pandagaz's castle...um... I copied everything over that looked interesting, so it might be - what did it look like? :-)

Ok, so I wrote up a basic "Stained Glass" mod, and it seems to work wonderfully.

I'ts just the basic doz full-saturation colors so far, so it's bright.

I'm just posting it here for you to peruse. I've programmed before, but not with .lua - nor do I have all the minetest syntax down yet, so if there's a better way to do it, by all means, lemme know.

You're welcome to put it in if you really feel like it... tho I'd like to put together more of the colors and script them in when I get a chance, perhaps within the next few days. I'll test out dimmer ones too and see if that looks better when you have a whole mess of them built up.

Also, I'd like to swap up my username.

I'm 34, named Eli. My 8-year-old kid got me hooked on Minetest. I've been trying out a few servers to find one that's safe for him to build on. I couldn't get back into the first one I tried, and the second server was full of griefers. Your site seems to be the best one, as it's buildable without all the BS.

Anyway, he's Dylan5, and I'd like to let that account just chill for the time being so he can use it whenever he's around. Perhaps get him to log in at his Mom's place, then I can build while he's on too.

I'll set up "Doyousketch2" as mine, and use that one from here on out. Thanks.

0gb, I do consider it to be a "real" server now, yes, though I still use it for testing when others aren't online.

sketch: the stained glass mod looks good, and is now on my server :-) I recommend you create a thread in Modding General covering it, it should be useful to others also. Feel free to use that second account for yourself as well, then. Interact granted. The Dylan5 account will remain for when your son is ready to sign on next.

I'm sleepy, and I make stupid mistakes like missing a comma while coding.
Think I got it mostly ironed out with the full-saturation glass-blocks tho.

Unless I'm missing something, I didn't see your color recipes for the bright colors.
Thinking many stained glass windows often have some light pastels in 'em.

If you aren't certain what they are, I can try using GIMP's color-picker to get 'em.

Your update to 0.8 is installed (pending a restart). Recommend you use github (or another similar service) to manage your code - makes life easier for both of us. :-)

In Unified Dyes, bright colors are created by mixing a bucket of white paint with a bottle of one of the basic full-saturation colors.

k, I didn't know github was easier. signed up but it'll be a minute before I get code posted there.

I'm trying to program it so they all stay in order by color, but it's turning out to be more than I'd hoped for.
it places them in alpha-numeric order, so it's trying to do aqua, blue, cyan...

tried putting 'em in numerically, but that's driving me up the wall,
'cuz 1 - 12 is read 1, 10, 11, 12, 2, 3, 4...

even worse, the descriptors double the complication,
because I assigned them numerical values as well
and in doing so, it still botches it.

example:

orange = 1, dark = 1, s50 = 1 == 111
yellow = 11, dark = 1, s50 = 1 == 1111
orange = 1, med = 2, s50 = 1 == 121

now I have a typo in the script somewhere,
and all I get is a generic ModError: Failed to load and run

I don't know how to get a more descriptive "error in line 23" or some-such
that actually helps you spot your error...

Delete (minetestfolder)/debug.txt if it exists, then put debug_log_level=1 into your minetest.conf. Make the error happen again, then copy&paste the error messages near the bottom of debug.txt.

As for numbering your colors, you're on the right track. Maybe do it like so (yes, I think in 8-bit terms :-) )...

  • There are 12 hues, so that fits into 4 bits. Just number them from 0, going clockwise around the color wheel: 0=red, 1=orange, 2=yellow, 3=lime, 4=green, etc.
  • There are four shades, so that's 2 more bits (0=dark, 1=medium, 2=full, 3=light).
  • There is are two saturation levels, for one more bit (0=50%, 1=100%).
  • There are colors and there are greys, so you need a 1-bit flag for that (0=this is a shade of grey, 1=this is a color).

So your color index, mathematically, would be: Shade + (saturation * 4) + (Hue * 8) + (Colorflag * 128)

Two corner cases would be needed when you're encoding/decoding your color values using this method:

If the shade is light (3), you need to force saturation to 1, because light colors have only a single saturation level.

If Colorflag is 0, then re-purpose the first 3 bits as a 5-level scale of grey shades. Otherwise, treat them as shade + saturation as described above.

If you store this as a quoted string of 0/1's, e.g. of the form CHHHHsSS (e.g. "10110110", which would mean "color, #6 (cyan), 100% saturation, 'full' brightness" in this example), it'll help avoid screwing up sorting order or having to use bitwise operations (which Lua doesn't have anyway) to separate out your colors.

tyvm. yeah, I thought the numbers would lay out that way too, but it didn't keep seperate placeholders for the digits. They all ran together.

I'm trying to figure out the git thing, but my brain is trashed from coding this.

Tried the mod out, and I think it's all in working order, so here's a proper version 1.0 that you're welcome to partake of.

k, took a good hour or so to figure Git out :P

anyway, fixed recipes, 'cuz I accidentially had an underscore in there that wasn't needed,

eh, I think it was a driver error. I'm running Linux Debian (testing)
whatever they call it now, think it's up to like ver. 7, codename wheezy.

It's an ATI Radeon X1950 Pro, so it oughta fly through Minetest like a breeze,
but it's still crunchy around the corners.

I chatted them up on their IRC chat for help, tho they made it sound like there's not much I can do about it.

I got a new screenshot up and posted the mod for everyone to use:

Ah. well in the meantime, I added support for stained glass in HDX, not that will affect anyone on this server who doesn't use that texture pack :-)

(I love my autogen script, it really cuts down on texturing work for this sorta stuff).
