I'm interested if it's affordable. I have no issue with technical shindigerry, the skills I have from other work are entirely cross-transferable.
Plus I'll be able to be king for a day and thwart all you tiny plebeians according to mood.

Wonderful post. I ask the same question, then next step, how does one run a remote server Other than uploading the data.

Nomis, would you also delete buildings and remove area-protection of users who try to annoy you with requests? Read their private messages and force them into sending you money in real life?
Maybe I have been reading too much BOFH lately.

If you have a semi-decent pc you can leave on 24/7 then it only costs you electricity...

I pay $14 monthly at togglebox.com for the FREE PIZZA server, it's a Debian Linux running on 2 CPUs, 20GB disk, 1GB RAM and 2 TB monthly bandwidth.
People tell me that the server is fast and it's not laggy.
Currently if you get a server with togglebox, you pay the first month and you get $100 on your account for free - thats basically running the server for free for 7 months :)

I pay $5 a month for my server. Above 10 players you can notice lag, with about 20 the lag becomes so strong that it's not fun to play any more.
That is (according to the hoster) 512 MB, 1 CPU, 20 GB SSD, 1000 GB Transfer.

I only pay the electricity costs for my Dual Core laptop server, possibly less than $5/month.
