How to play over LAN(without using internet)?

I know this question has been asked before, but I can't find a good explanation.
I tried to set up as server according to instructions I found online. Here's what I did:
>I went to the server tab of minetest, and started a game using port 30000, with "public" unchecked.
>I then got a friend to connect from a computer on the same home network using my IP address and the same port.
>We had fun playing and then found out that we'd used 30mb of internet data.

So my question is, how can I do this without using internet data? or is it impossible?
(also I have next to no understanding of LAN or internet connections)

also, I am using windows10

One person/computer hosts a game from the server tab. All the other people use clients to connect.
The hoster and any clients need to be on the same router.

You need to find the LAN address of the hoster not the IP address, that's what the clients type in.

http://www.groovypost.com/howto/microso ... ows-7-cmd/

On linux, open a terminal and type "ifconfig"
You're looking for something like: inet addr:192.168.1.6

hmmm, I already did that(sorry I should have said).
I used "IPv4" address under "Wireless LAN adapter wireless network connection".
I'll try again and make sure there is nothing else using up internet data.

Check that your anti-virus isn't blocking it. Check that its allowed in Windows Firewall (assuming your using that). What port are you using? Are you starting using the "Server" tab or via cmd prompt?
