How to join a server???

I have decided I want to join a server so I went onto the server list and looked for 0.4 versions of the game and every ip address i entered just timed out and I haven't been able to join??

Does anyone know what the problem is?? And can you explain in lamest terms as I am not a computer programmer etc just a fan of the game.
