Working on a fix.

by Jesseman1 » Mon Sep 12, 2016 14:18

So, I wanted to host a multiplayer server on my home computer, and did everything I was supposed to do like setting a static IP, enabling Public, hosting it on the "server" tab, telling the game to add my world to the public server list, port forwarding incoming traffic directly to my world, and telling my firewall to ignore everything connecting to my world, but for some reason, nobody could connect and I couldn't understand why. Then, with @taikedz 's help, I found out that anyone wanting to connect to me has to go through 2 routers! I live in a rural area, and the only way for me to get internet is through a wireless beacon system set up by my ISP. This means that my computer connects to my router, then wirelessly connects to my ISP's router before finally going to the rest of the world. Therefore, I need to ask my ISP to forward a port directly to my router before my server will work. Wish me luck.

My server is very small, only 5 users at a time.
My server is a PvP enabled survival server. I don't know how to get it displayed on the public server list, so I'll give the address and port here.

Address: 104.249.225.28

Port: 30000

Always check the server status, I'll keep it updated.
Server Status: Down until further notice.

Hi Jesseman1, the address you provided, 192.168.10.168 is a local area network.address. If you want people from outside your network to access to your server, you have to.provide an Internet address and forward ports from your box to your computer

You can get your internet IP address using websites like this one : https://www.whatismyip.com/

Then you go to your ISP box administration (if you have a box) and "forward" ports 30000/TCP and 30000/UDP to the local address you gave first.

Then you should be able to connect to your server using your.internet.ip.adress:30000 (replace with the IP you got from the webside).

You may need to learn a little bit about networking, it's not so simple... but it's not complicated neither.

And I forgot, if you have a firewall, open 30000/TCP and 30000/UDP port.

Tried connecting, timed out. Still up? Still same IP?

Note that if you restart your home router you might get a different IP address.

Also, you should consider using duckdns.org to give a "permanent" domain name, that can point to the correct IP address as and when it changes and you update the DuckDNS record

I don't know. I wasn't doing anything wrong either - and to this day I've failed to make a server.

I will try this again when i get back.

If you try to connect using your public ip even from home you should be able to determine whether it is connectable.

You might want to check that your router is forwarding to the right machine

So we hashed it out and it turns out it's an ISP layer problem.

jesseman1 is on a wireless ISP - the home router is in fact connected to a wireless WAN which assigns it an address at the wireless level - the public IP will be that of the wireless beacon itself.

So the connections are stopping at the ISP's access point, which is dropping the packets, of course.

A home Minetest server, in this case, is impossible, without reaching an extra public server to punch a hole through to. I doubt the ISP will forward all and any port 30000 requests to jesse's router :-P

@Naj, I... never thought about that. I can provide a brief explanation though.

Hi Jesseman1- Welcome to the archival nature of internet forums :-)

Tbh most of what was covered is std fare as i recall. But in future leave stuff up unless you think it might be confidential or could be used to unduly trace a person, or if it could irreversably mislead.

For example I deleted my link simply because i didnt want people to think it was some sort of official mintest help channel, but left the rest of the post and a description of what was removed.

@talkedz I see, I was just trying to tidy up the comments; I was under the impression that once I got the issue fixed, nobody would want to dig through comments no longer relevant to the running server.
