Server Posting Format Proposal

PostPosted: Sat Apr 07, 2012 14:10
by RabbiBob
In following with the Mod forum post formatting, the below is my proposal for a format covering server information posting. The subject line would cover 5 elements: 1) this is a server, 2) the server name, 3) Minetest build used, 4) methods to connect, 5) On\Off Status. Owner would be implied by the poster of the thread and clarified in the body of the post if needed. For the body of the post, I've included a template that I believe covers the essentials around getting a person connect to your server.

This would make it very easy to scan the Server forum to see all of the active servers and know the basics at a glance and then everything needed to get connected in the body.

If found acceptable, please pin and I'll remove everything from the line below up. If moderation is needed, I am happy to do this as well, including bringing some of the current posts up to date.

Thank you,
Bob

-----------------
Posting a server for others to join

Post your server in the Servers forum according to the following guidelines:

Subject

The subject line will follow the following format(s)
  • [Server] <Server Name> [Minetest Build Version] [Public IP|Remobo|Hamachi|] [Offline\Online]

Examples:

  • [Server] Infinity Server [20120326-127] [Remobo|Hamachi] [Offline]
  • [Server] Red Crab's Server [20120106-1] [Public IP] [Offline]

From the above, one could tell by the forum post the following:

Jordan4ibanez's Infity Server runs version 20120326-127, is accessible via Remobo and Hamachi. It is currently offline.
Red Crab runs Red Crab's Server using release 20120106-1, is accessible via a public IP. It is currently offline.

The owner of the server will be assumed to be the poster of the thread.

Contents - Required

The contents of the post will contain at a minimum the following:

  • Server Name: <server name>
  • Server Owner: <your name - (email address optional)>
  • Server Version : <minetest server version & link to downloadable version if needed>
  • Server Address : <IP Address or URL Name>
  • Server port : <server port>
  • Connection Type : <Public IP|Remobo|Hamachi|Etc>

Contents - Good To Know

  • Server Admin(s):
  • Server Mods(s):
  • Priv Requests: <request by way for Forum, IRC, email, etc>
  • Mods: <list game mods>
  • Texture Pack: <stock\custom>
  • Notes:

Screenshots, server specs, etc are good to include as well.

Template

To get you started, copy the following to a new post and fill in the blanks.

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all

Right owner, admin, and mods.
How about just moderators to solve the problems.

And server name is unnecessary unless it is themed. But then you could just have
Texture Pack:

Just one thing: In the examples it says
Infinity Server [Latest Github]

In my opinion "Latest GitHub" is ok in the thread name, but there should be the real version number or the date+time of git pull in the first post.

Your right. And The connection type would save me the time of reading the whole post.

[Connections Type] Servername/maybe [versions]

I went back and forth on that and in the end, I would agree to actually having a version number there.

Removed Admin.

Server name is a nice to have identifier. I've run game servers for years that were known in various communities by the name alone (My Pizza & Beer was a very busy Counterstrike server back in the day).

Also I tested name length, it conforms to the forum software restrictions just fine.

I still don't like it, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
