Updated to version 0.4.1, get it from the main download page. Some people have had crashes with the 0.4.1 client; you can still use an older one if it doesn't work.

If the newest one doesn't work, the version you were using should still be fine.
And I have a webserver on my server now, which will serve the maps. Go to menche.servegame.com/map.png; there's nothing there right now but it's generating as I type this. Looks to be about 45 minutes to finish.

In minetest, all mods are downloaded from the server automatically, so no.
