Afaik mods are server-sided so no.

Advantage:
- you can try out all kind of mods without installing them yourself

Not really; all Minetest mods are installed server-side, thus when connecting to servers it doesn't matter what mods you have installed locally (or even what games). However, you can probably find a server that has the mods that you want on it, and, if not, some server admins might be happy to install a mod for you.

You can also host a server, in which case you can use whatever mods you want to use on it.
