Join a server [0.4.8]

Hello,

Few questions about how and why join an existing server.
I'm quite new in minetest ; from 2 to 3 months old ! and I'd like to learn more about minetest.

I mined in standalone maps, very deep, crafted several items, discovered almost all "blocks' kind", died more than I can count...
I managed, thanks to help get from kind members of that forum, to build minetest version 0.4.8 on my linux (Mageia 3).
Now, I think it's time to be faced to other "players".

I'd like to find a "rooky" server, if such one does exist, with maybe help from other members. If that doesn't exist, how and what do I have to do to join a server ?
An last question about our character : when joining a server, the character is blanck I think, if not, how to prepare it ?

Thanks for help

There are no special servers for new players. We're all new and inexperienced when we join a new server :-) Just select one from the public server list and take a look. If you have questsions, ask the players that are online. You can see that list by typing
Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
/status

in the chat window. The chat opens when you press "t". For a chat history (important on servers), press F10. If you ask a question on the chat, in general all players that notice it (players busy mining or building may sometimes not pay close enough attention to the chat) will try to help you.

The rules vary from server to server. Most have boards close to spawn (that is where you end up when you die or type /spawn) citing their specific rules. Something like "don't grief" (that is: don't destroy buildings built by others), and general beeing polite to each other are found on most servers.

Some servers do not grant you interact by default. In such a case look for signs stating the procedure that particular server employs or ask around. Without interact, you can'd dig or built.

There are plenty of servers out there. Take a look and decide what you like most!
