i've tried hosting a server from the server tab in-game, but it won't work, can anyone help? Also, LAN servers are like a server that only people using the same internet connection can get onto.

You did it right. You need your server's computer LAN address.

You need to make sure anyone trying to connect to the server is using the correct port as well as the correct LAN IP address. Even if you have the right IP, if the port number is wrong then a computer won't be able to connect.
You may need to make sure that the Windows (or other) firewall software is not blocking the connection. Windows Firewall will typically prompt you when a computer tries to make a connection.
You're on the right track and it does work because I do it all the time on my home network:
One computer is the server
All other computers connect as a client.
