This mod makes materials found in the desert more useful. It adds the uses of normal stone/sand to desert stone/sand.
Features:
  • desert cobble (now dropped by desert stone)
  • desert stone can be smelted from desert cobble, like normal stone
  • full set of desert stone tools: shovel, pick, sword, axe
  • furnace can be crafted from desert cobble
  • dry shrub can be crafted into a stick
  • desert sand can be smelted into glass
  • desert sand can be crafted into desert sandstone
  • desert sandstone can be crafted back into desert sand
  • desert stone, sandstone, and cobble can be made into stairs and slabs

Good ! I think I'm going to install it on my server soon :)
Are the tools made from stone or cobblestone ?
And how powerful are they, compared to normal cobble ?
EDIT: Installed
EDIT2: You could make a desert furnace, that is a bit faster than regular one.

Nice textures. Are the tools crafted from desert stone or desert cobble?

terminalerror: They are crafted from desert cobble, I just tested, because he didn't answer :D

Beat me to it! D: Yeah, I'm trying to make desert stone stuff just like regular stone, but with a red tint. Recipes and durability are the same.

I think desert_uses sounds weird, thinking of renaming it to desert_materials or desert_stuff.
EDIT: decided not to

True, but last I checked, GloopMaster had removed the link to gloopores, so it may be a little hard to find.

I don't tend to use sandstone blocks, because they take four sand to make, but you only get one sand back when you mine it. If you misplace a block and need to remove it, you just lost three sand for no good reason! But I do use sandstone stairs, as they are stable, and do not mysteriously loose matter. Do you have any plans to add desert sandstone staircases?

EDIT: Oh? Looking at the source code, it seems your desert sandstone doesn't suffer the same matter loss. Awesome.

That sand loss has indeed been fixed. 4 sand -> 1 sandstone, but dig it and it gives you back 1 sandstone, which crafts back to 4 sand if you need it.

I'll change my desert sandstone recipe to match that, I added it before I saw that fix.

Really? Wonderful. It sounds like a lot of things have fixed in the upcoming version. Sandstone and buckets (both a spelling error and the bucket liquid replacing solid objects), and I even hear a rumour that saplings no longer eat the blocks above them when they grow. These things get to me because of my CDO, so it's great to have them repaired.

(CDO is like OCD, but the letters are in alphabetical order. Like they should be.)

With the current upstream you can craft pickaxes from stone, cobblestone and desert stone (it all produces the same stone pickaxe). It uses the group "stone" for that; rating is 1 for stone and 2 for cobblestone.

Updated to version 3.
  • Added stairs and slabs for desert stone, cobble, and sandstone.
  • Made desert sandstone's recipes match those of regular sandstone.

A recent commit in minetest_game allowed me to remove the custom stairs.lua and depend on the stairs mod. The update is in the git repo; I'm not making a new release yet because it doesn't work with the stable version of minetest_game. The only difference this makes is that the stairs and slabs appear to be from the stairs mod rather than desert_uses. For example, desert_uses:stair_desert_cobble is now stairs:stair_desert_cobble.

Updated to version 4: just some texture updates. See the original post for download.

Most of that is already in the default game included.

Just include the rest of it (like the desert stone furnace and the desert stone cobble.)

This! Very much agree.
