You should remove the semi-transparent pixels at the side of the textures (as I did in the modified compass mod) to fix the wrong looking wielditem.

Done. Updated the mod, in same version number as it's no change to the code.

Given the special nature of a clock, I might suggest taking advantage of the changes to the behavior of Mese:

Perhaps use a regular Mese Crystal in the center instead of the open space.

You would need to change the compass item often (since the compass' look would depend on the player's yaw), causing lag.
