In singleplayer: Just stand on top of the mattress. The time will be forwarded about eight hours, no matter what time it is.
In multiplayer: Just the same but it calculates the time that is forwarded based on how many players are in the bed.
( number of players in bed / number total players ) * eight hours
So the more player are in the bed the faster the night goes by.
It does not set your spawn point.
