Minetest Launcher

by Heybye44 » Mon Sep 14, 2015 12:21

Yesterday I started working on a launcher from MT in Node-Webkit. I'm pretty new to Node feel free to help.

EDIT: This isn't a replacement for the Main Menu. It's supposed to make downloading and installing mods, texture packs, and subgames more convenient, especially for new players. I'll probably rewrite the CSS to look less like freeminer.

Keep up your work :)

I think Minetest need a new Mainmenu as the actual is very ugly.

Minetest has a mainmenu, not a launcher, and this suggested one isn't much better.

A new mainmenu has been suggested (by c55 himself) which works like this:

  • A main screen with
    • a button for each subgame installed, with a screenshot and descriptions.
    • and a button for multiplayer (client) - basically a server list
  • A subgame screen allows you to
    • create a world
    • host a new server

This requires support for subgames to specify descriptions and screenshots. The Lua Main Menu should be rewritten to allow templating, rather like MVC (Model View Controller) where you pass parameters to a view to be rendered.

MTPM is an attempt to rewrite the ingame mod manager (was removed from MT) to support other sources than MMDB (which is dead). A settings explorer is also needed.

Did you play Freeminer before? (I think not, as you're using Win XP)
The layout looks very similar to the Freeminer mainmenu.

I personally think that a laucher isn't very useful as there are too less things to configure there.

I'd still prefer to have large buttons with symbols for singleplayer, multiplayer and settings as the starting screen plus a small link for contributors (sometimes it's annoying that games auto-translate when English isn't one's native language!). Mods, texturepacks and even starting your own server would become submenus of the settings menu. That way it ought to be much easier for new users and friendlier for tablet users. Having small screenshots of what you last saw when visiting a particular world might also be helpful. Servers ought to provide their own tiny screenshot each.
A list of my mods can be found here.

I think this is a very good idea. Actually, Minetest is too unaccesible for casual players (For example, people would be more used to look at multiplayer instead of client, to play on multiplayer ;) ).
The auto downloader is a very important feature to me, has the auto-updater, and the flat but pretty menus (yes it's eye-candy, but it's important for it can work).

Continue ! it can be a very useful tool for everyone :)

I actually played around in VB.net with this concept. Including upgrading to latest version, a mod manager that includes a browser module and the ability to downgrade to past versions, a very good idea and I fully support it!
