Server-specific forums?

by taikedz » Mon Jan 16, 2017 20:41

Hallo!

Some servers have posts on this here forum, but they're just a single thread.

I was wondering if it would be of interest to have

    * a forum that has a server as a "topic" and allow discussions of their own
    * what server tech? (phpBB ? HumHub ? other/recommendation?)
    * who would host such a server?

I am interested in hosting this server myself, but wanted to know if there was even any interest in the first place?

I think server owners should open their own forum on their server for the following reasons:

  • Server admins can define moderators and set up their hierarchy
  • Easier to add more sub-forums when the server grows
  • Announcements can easily be found (hard to miss a (sub-)forum called "Announcements")
  • Polls and Questions are easier to manage or to mark as expired/solved
  • The Minetest forums (here) stay overviewable
Surely there are also negative points, such as that people must register on another forum too. Server owner also might not want to start a webserver on top of the Minetest one.

This is pretty much my thoughts on this topic. And it's exactly how we'll approach it when our server finally gets public.
