Speedups for MT?

by Krock » Mon Oct 21, 2013 16:25

Hello Forumers,

I got the problem, Minetets uses all my CPU time (ingame) and the FPS is between 4 and 21,
full view is not possible and shaders are not even a theme for me....

In the MT's IRC chat I already got some hints but my video card does not share more memory than 64MB. But the aperture size is on 512MB of total 512MB possible...
I turned all the settings in MT off, using OpenGL as renderer because direct3d always gives me "some exception" errors and results in disconnect from server.

Thanks for any help... are more system details needed?

Ow, that's brutal.

This is the best build of minetest. Anyroad, you'll want to grab a lower-res texture pack from the TPs forum, install that, and try BlockMen's build again. Maybe DirectX will work (if not, you can change it to direct3d8)...

Good luck!

If the CPU usage is maxed out when playing and your GPU only has 64mb i would say the whole rig is a bit old, even for minetest. I highly doubt its even worth upgrading the card as the rest of the PC is most likely so outdated, save the money for a cheapish 2nd hand rig is what i say.

A complete 2nd hand quad core holding a 1gb card is only worth around $100-200 here in Australia (local paper), thats the same price as a brand new low-midrange card.

PC hardware plummets in value only months after release, couple year old rig is worth pocket change($200max) however 2 years ago it would have been a decent $1500+ gaming rig.

My PC is around 2 years old and worth around $200 and its a 6 core OC @3.9ghz on UD7 holding a clocked 1GB ATi 6990, it runs Minetest in its sleep 17% CPU usage and a healthy 60fps. It cost me $1000 to build over 2 years ago, still plays any game i throw at it.
Running @1.19 MHz, 128 bytes of RAM and interchangeable 4kb ROM carts!

CPU maxes out on my dualcore - although that's because I'm running both mobf and simplemobs, and did a few other tweaks. Running it as a multiplayer server is fine - so long as I have only three other players.

Modern Minetest is pretty demanding. Older builds might run smoother, but the latest minetest runs awesomely on new hardware.

Have you considered Minetest Classic? It's built on the older minetest (0.3.1), and has features like the latest (apart from mods)...

Mobf with aggressive mobs activated and spawning at night plus multiplayer - that may still put a strain on your CPU. Perhaps you ought to consult Sapier and help him find out what really causes the high cpu usage.

Here are a few tips to speedup minetest...

1. Replace mobf with simplemobs mod
2. Edit minetest.conf file and add these 3 lines:

enable_fog = false
debug_log_level = 0
num_emerge_threads = 2

... the last line helps multicore processors speed up map generation so change the 2 to however many cores your CPU has...
