I bet paramat could build a nice mountain generator (I think he already did), and with AdventureTest, we could achieve something of the standards of the this:

Image
7:42 PM - Bauglio: I think if you go to staples you could steal firmware from a fax machine that would run better than win10 does on any platform
7:42 PM - Bauglio: so fudge the stable build
7:43 PM - Bauglio: get the staple build

My PC wouldn't start up again when the graphics and details would be that high.

Well at least there is a video of the demo on the website. I doubt if minetest or anything else could get that close... it's worth trying though.

Though I do agree that proper biome generation would be cool. A generator that would build continents and not just random biomes. Maybe draw a world with mapedit feature or bumpmap for the entire map. You could then take real and imagine maps.... who wouldn't like a world map of middle earth?

IMHO everything you *want* to build (and can do so at a sufficiently high quality) is worth building. What I'd like to see in Minetest are more huge impressive projects like there appear to be on some Minecraft servers. Like those maps JP imported - only built for MT from the beginning. Karsthafen is such a thing. AspireMint also creates very huge, impressive and detailled megastructures.

But in general, even a small house will do as long as it's well done, whereas huge cobble constructions which are big and nothing else don't count.

I've actually made a little groundwork in that direction, although I have shamefully neglected the project (I'm not eager to 1. make a mod dependent upon LuaJIT or 2. to deal with LibPNG). And even more ironically, the first map I tested was Middle Earth. Anyway, dig back several pages in the screenshot thread to view my biome map reader. I haven't published the code because it runs on icky, memory eating BMP images. I will get back to the project, I'm just busy with SkyTest and CaveRealms right now.
Nam ex spatio, omnes res venire possunt.
Why let the ground limit you when you can reach for the sky?
Back to college now, yay for sophomore year schedules. :P
