The “ignore” node

by Wuzzy » Sun Feb 01, 2015 20:37

Some questions about the node type “ignore”:

  • What exactly does it mean?
  • How does Minetest use it?
  • How does the player interact with it?
  • Can it be placed manually?
  • Can it be generated by Lua (i.e. with minetest.set_note)?
  • Can it be overwritten with minetest.overwrite_item?
  • Which other special or unexpected properties does this node type have?

It's used where mapblocks haven't been loaded yet. You collide with it. You can't place blocks in it. You should not place it or dig it or modify it. It is an engine thing. It can not be placed manually.

For example, when you go past 31000 only ignore nodes are generated. That is the force field.

«Can it be placed manually?
try it: "/giveme ignore -1", AFAIK it tells only an error

»Can it be generated by Lua (i.e. with minetest.set_note)?
AFAIK it tells only an error

«Can it be overwritten with minetest.overwrite_item?
no, air can't be overridden, too

Are you sure air can't be overridden? I thought I've seen examples of it being done. Air is just a node in built-in.

When Krock asked me to make a weather mod which doesn't lag much, l thought l could easily override air to look plantlike with a rain animation. But it didn't work, air didn't become a rain node.
Maybe you can only override simple things of air, e.g. its description or its drop.
