I think the lowest point I legitimately ever got was -2269.5, but only because I played the Ethereal mod and I wanted to see those nice illumishrooms. Usually I don’t dig so deep. And I don’t know anymore how long I took for it, I dug very irregularly.

o_O But people actually mine to the bottom, like over 30000 freaking blocks?
lol, how pointless. There is currently absulutely nothing special there, actually. The world just ends. It’s even a bit buggy/weird, since you can walk on … nothing?
What’s the incentive? Do you have a special mod?

I only know one mod which adds something special to the bottom, it’s bedrock. But that’s mosly just a technical solution to avoid walking of an invisible floor; I kinda like it; however.
Most mods add some stuff a bit deeper, but after the first couple of thausands deep, things just repeat usually.

But knowing that people are actually insane enough to dig that deep, this may be an incentive to create mods which add more diversity into the ground. Especially to add something special at the very bottom. Like, people dig down 30000 blocks and we still have basically just two natural stone types (stone, desert stone)? Doesn’t that get boring?
I know there are mods that supposedly add new stone types but actually they spawn just like ores, so that does not really count. OK, there is “desert stone” but it can be only seen near the surface.

I am dieing to see a mod which comes with several stone layers (okay, maybe not “layers”, if they would be 100% flat, that would be boring), all with different hardness to crush through. So it’s not simply “create stone pickaxe, face down and dig!”.

Jordach does something like that in bfd. What would be cool is a realistic earth-like layers. eg. core, mantle, sandstone, etc. Kind of like underground biomes.

Not exactly at the bottom, but still pretty deep are the "caverealms" caves. They're worth digging down for! The crystals and other glowing nodes glimmer in the "night" (=cave ceiling/walls).

I ususally go down to somewhere slightly below -1024 when doing some "serious" mining (i.e. gathering material). At that layer, the occasional mese block may be found, and no more ores spawn below that.
A list of my mods can be found here.

Me and a buddy is currently busy with a project to mine down to the end of the world.
Just for the fun of it and to say that we did it.

We are only using pickaxes , no mining equipment. The whole mine get's ladders from top to bottom and
we are going to build 3 "basecamps" underground at different levels.

Started on 2014-10-17
We are currently at -17800

And we are finished :) We completed the mine on 2014-11-12.
Built a little shack from Messe and gold.
And now I finally know what bedrock looks like.

I knew someone who dug to the bottom without special tools.

On VanessaE's Survival server : I've mined at 309 ; -2187 ; -282

On MinetestForFun, trel/furiousfish has mined at -75 ; -3902 ; -213 and I've used his mine :p
I've even built an underground house at -1347 !
Very busy this year too, so do not expect me to be very active on the forum or in game. But I'm not about to drop Minetest forever :)

Very deep, around -750 to -800.
It gets easier to find mese at that level.

-1250. I don't spend a whole lot of time mining as I would rather enjoy being on the surface many times than rush to get to the bottom. I feel like accomplishing this is not a priority for me.

My mining style is like this;
I dig downwards in a staircase fashion, and extract any valuables along the way.
If I find a cave, I extract all the ores then go to the lowest spot and continue.
It RAKES in iron, so it can go on until I get bored of crafting pickaxes.
Long live OperatorCorp!
