Have you played MineCr*ft? If you have, then MT's similar enough for the base gameplay.

What is it you want to start? Just getting into the game in general?

In order to have a game that feels fully-featured, you will need to build-your-own with Minetest by adding mods.

Some immediate benefits you will notice switching from MC to Minetest:
- Map height far above Minecraft's limit of 256
- Locked chests included by default (no modding)
- Teleport, set home included by default
- Swim vertically as well as horizontally
- Item stacks to 99 instead of 64

@Tux1: try using my subgame, it should be fairly stable now.
Pixture

It's pretty different from Minetest's default subgame, be warned. There's an easy craft guide built-in, so crafting is much simpler.

Or, you can connect to pixture.quelcom.xyz, port 30000. PM me on this forum, i'll grant you interact ASAP.

Multiplayer is pretty nice too.

The wiki, if you have trouble installing mods/subgames, or if you don't understand some of the gameplay mechanics: http://wiki.minetest.net/Main_Page

don't be fooled by old wiki pages that list "popular mods". most of them are outdated or not the best mod of that variant. (some things have been introduced in different mods in various ways.) the most stable/best are the mods that are newly developed or recently updated.

here are some recommendatons:
TenPlus1's mods: https://github.com/tenplus1
they all work with the default game and with each other, no problems or conflicts here.
includes mobs, armor, a new mapgen, farming, ect.

xdecor: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=12534
adds new decorative stuff and tool enchanting.

mesecons: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=628
it's like redstone, but yellow and totally different.

there are more good and/or interesting mods around, but those are the ones that i have used after testing them all.

I play MC much much more then I plat MT, there's a very good reason for it,

If you are coming to Minetest from Minecraft then I would suggest that you stay with Minecraft until Minetest gets a bit better, for sample.

1: Minecraft has all the accessory's that Minetest doesn't

2: Minecraft has the realistic terrain that generators lovely terrain

3: Minetest has redstone that does X100 more then Minetest's rubbish mesecones HINT ( I am a redstoner)

4: Minecraft's combat is VERY realistic, players and entity's have a recoil making everything much much better

5: Minecraft has fully functional bows, that also give a recoil, and stick on entity's and blocks, HINT (I am also a ranger)

6: Minecraft's mods are all COMPATIBLE with all in game and other mods, flansmod for 1.7.10 for instance, you can shoot glass, basicly all mobs can be killed by a flans mod gun

And not to say about MInetest's rubbish textures, all the texturepacks I use are all Minecraft's some I have converted myself

And what about Minetest's new in game minimap? from my point of view it's useless, does it have way points? Does it automaticely change top cave mod? does it show you where there are mobs? Players? Does it show if there wherein g armour?

I have got around 20 mods and none of them are compatible with the other mods, the firearms mod for instance, the firearms mod is the only mod I can find that works, so, anyone tried shooting a zombie with one??

Bet you it wont work,

Minetest is meant to be open coerce so that anyone can do/have anything they like with the game. now when I look up a mod for Minecraft, ding, I have it! Now try that with Minetest? even if there is one 7 out of 10 it will be buggy or crash your game.

Also you cant make films in Minetest ju to the big lack of reality....

I could go on all day.....

suggestion, stay MC till mt gets better

i am just the opposite. i say minecraft is utter rubbish. minecraft is focused so much on magic and sorcery that they don't have a very scientific aspect without mods. minetest on the other hand is more of a modding engine. if you want tou can even change the minetest code and the legally redistribute it. and i don't care much about installing mobs (most of the time). but one main reason i would say to stick with minetest is just because of the open source license. and if you find a mod that is not compatible with another then you edit some code to make it compatible. and one thing i like about minetest is that you can essentialy make whatever game you want. it can be minecraft like, or not. if you want to make a game about doctor who or something without a block breaking or placing aspect, or a dungeon crawler game. you can do that in minetest. (you could in minecraft but in minetest you don't have to decompile the game just to make a mod and minetest has an lua modding api so you would only have to know lua (which is probably easier than java))

EDIT: then again that is just my opinion

Redstone can do more than Mesecons? I disagree, I think that there's just fewer Meseconers.

Are you still a Minetest newbie?
First of all, yes, you are right, in Minetest there are a couple of things which are different in Minetest. The biggest difference is probably that Minetest is a game engine, not a game itself.
To help you get started, you may want to try out the unofficial Tutorial. It explains a lot of basic gameplay concepts:
Tutorial.
But you have to download and install it first. Download version 1.8.2, ignore version 2.0.1 for now. You find other instructions on the wiki page linked from there.
I really wish this tutorial would be official but it has not been included so far. :-(

If you're done with the Tutorial, you may want to start playing with Minetest Game (supplied with Minetest by default) and if you get bored with it, go through the Subgame Releases forums and try out one of these. Sadly, getting started with Minetest Game is still a bit confusing since you know none of the crafting recipes.
Consult the Community Wiki for crafting recipes of Minetest Game.
If you need help installing Minetest etc., see the getting started guide on the Community Wiki: http://wiki.minetest.net/Getting_Started
(it may be a bit overwhelming!)

Also, I really want to hear your feedback on the Tutorial, because I really want to know what newbies have to say about it. Post in the tutorial thread and I would be really thankful for that.
There is no point in testing a tutorial by people who already know Minetest pretty well. ;-)
I'm creating MineClone 2, a Minecraft clone for Minetest.
I made the Help modpack, adding in-game help to Minetest.
