Minetest Server requirements

by burli » Fri Jun 10, 2016 12:42

What are the requirements for a local Minetest Server? He should be able to run mods like plantlife and valleys_c. How much RAM and minimum CPU are required?

I dunno dude...

But normally a good RAM (+4GB), a good CPU (a nice Intel or AMD will work).

But the best way to know, it's testing, if you have a good Linux Distro, the server will be faster...

-If your computer can run Minetest (the 0.4.14) at 50-60 FPS, surely it's ready for a server!

I was wondering because I heard that some people use Intel Atoms or even Raspberry Pi as server. I think, this works with minetest vanilla, but not with some heavier mods

I think a server don't needs to be soo good. I ran some on a 10 years old pc. This works if there are not more than 5 players, but most old pc need too much energy, so using a raspi 3 could work for you, if you dont have a good pc for that.
Minetest runs better on Linux. So I'm using Linux.

Technically, the only system requirements for the server are as follows:
[li]
[*]A supported OS
[*]Enough RAM+Swap to not run out
[*]Enough storage for stuff to fit
[*]A network connection to the client(s)
[/li]

Beyond that, there are no hardware "requirements", as all that more power will do is make it run faster. How fast it needs to be is determined by the users' preferences.

As far as recommendations are concerned, to run a server with the Dreambuilder modpack installed (about as heavy as it gets), you'll want about a 2+ GHz CPU for 1-2 users, 3+ GHz for 3-5, and probably 4+ GHz for more than that, as a rough estimate. RAM usage will vary wildly depending on several other factors, and the best way to determine that is to measure it with top or something.
