Simple way to speedboost Minetest.

by Jordach » Mon Sep 24, 2012 15:45

This guide focuses primarily on Windows XP Home Edition.

1) Your are going to need two Minetests. (Extract twice and rename the second time)

2) Download yer best mods. And place these into the first Minetest IN THE GAMES FOLDER (minetest_game), NOT MODS.

3) Create a .bat file -- or download: http://ompldr.org/vZm1iYQ/operate%20server.bat

A) Move that .bat file into the bin folder of The first Minetest.

B) Copy and paste this code
Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
minetest.exe --server --gameid minetest --world world
into notepad and save as operate_server.bat in the /minetest/bin/ folder.

C) Send to desktop and run to test:

D) Open Minetest (2nd folder)

E) Head to multiplayer, type your name and put this in as the address:
Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
127.0.0.1

Should connect, I will provide a YouTube Video later.

Notations:

THIS RUNS A SERVER INSTANCE.

ALSO RUNS ANOTHER CONSOLE WITH THE NORMAL CLIENT.

Also, there is no need for port forwarding.

Hey Jordach.

How does this give a speed boost? Is it because the server and the client are running as seperate processes, and therefore on different cores? Or is there something I am missing.

Yes, probably, although the speed boost given won't be very visible, especially on single-core CPUs.

Calinou, when digging or building, my Minetests framerate drops. This helps somewhat.

Just as long as your processor is Pentium 4 + Hyperthreading, a somewhat boost will occur.

The more cores, the bigger the impact will be.

But if its 2 threads, a smaller, yet noticible boost can be made.
