What are your system specs?
OS? CPU? Memory?

That does not seem so bad.

I have Ubuntu 12.04, Intel E5700 Dual-Core @ 3.0 GHz, 4GB of RAM, and an integrated Intel graphics card and have on average 40FPS.

What is your graphics card?
Do you have latest drivers?

EDIT:

Check that you don't have "full range" view activated (toggle with 'R').
Also try lowering the draw distance (with '+' and '-')

It's perfectly normal, the CPU reduces its frequency and voltage when it is idle (edit: or throttling, see below).

jviveiros8 wrote:NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS

Wow, that's a slow card. However, I don't think getting 6-7 FPS on that card is normal -- I have about 40 FPS or so with a 9600M (with shaders disabled).

Try disabling shaders and fancy trees, these can be slow on older cards.

Also, note that excessive CPU or graphics card temperatures can cause the hardware to throttle (reduce its frequency), which can reduce performance a lot when playing. Or, if your RAM is full, your system might swap to disk, which can cause the game to be much slower. Throttling usually kicks in at about 90°C to 100°C.

Try cleaning up your laptop, maybe change the thermal paste if your laptop is overheating.

Lastly, make sure you didn't toggle full viewing range (default is "R" to enable/disable it).

You spelt Crapy Its Crappy :)
Have you disabled things like 3D clouds, Shaders, Mip-Mapping, Anistropic Filtering, Bi-Linear Filtering, Tri-Linear Filtering and Particles?

with box specs lower than mentioned above i do have steady 60fps on windows
windows 7,dual core 1.8ghz, 4gb ram, radeon HD4670

on linux i do have 40-50fps (xubuntu 12.04)

whole bunch of mods installed: technic, mesecons, pipeworks, moretrees etc
and of course 128x texture pack.

So, to the point: check your video drivers, make some cleaning.
You should have way better performance...

Ubuntu is 100X faster than Windows 7 for me (starts up fully in 3 seconds, compared to a minute)

Not sure about Windows 8, apparently it is light weight.

I get 40-60 FPS on my:

Windows 7 / Ubuntu dual boot
Pentium
4GB Ram
500GB Hard Drive

Windows 7 is really fast to start. The first time. After the first time you run "windows updates" or you install any software, it is one minute longer. And everyday, it becomes a bit longer. And not talking about the updates installing on startup, making you lose a lot of time (it is really variable).
I made a few (a lot of?) mods for minetest: here is a list.
See also the MT-Faithful texture pack (work in progress).

Try downgrading that to windows xp or windows 7.But for better FPS try windows xp since it don't use alot of features.

... my Windows partition has better performance than Ubuntu. Bloody graphics drivers. Anyways, DON'T DOWNGRADE. Performance-wise, Windows 8 kicks 7 and XP's butts. Benchmarks prove it, as does my personal experience (5 FPS higher).

... I wonder if the problem isn't OpenGL. Windows doesn't support it all that well. Log back into your game, and type this command: /set video_driver direct3d9

Can't use shaders, but performance should jump big time. Other than that, I can't offer any advice.

It depends on your graphics card, and usually it works well on modern hardware. ;)

OpenGL on my windows builds (even with my somewhat modern quad with a third party graphics card) tends to be much lower. Kinda wish I was upgrading my hardware this year. Oh well.

Runs okay on my "stock" Dell 1520, so it isn't the game. Might need to configure it, that's all.
