I found out about minetest in April (?) 2012 and played 0.3.1 stable at the beginning. It took me some hours to figure out what the black thing in the stone was (it turned out it was coal) and how to use a furnace :D The wiki at minetest.com was very helpful at that time. This time also included ragequits because of DMs destroying everything.
I read about mods in the wiki, so I wanted to get the Mesecons mod, since I originally wanted to play arround with redstone in Minecraft. But since Minecraft is not free I looked for alternatives and found Minetest. However, I switched to the current 0.4 snapshot of Minetest of that time in order to get the Mesecons mod working (I used the daily/unstable PPA). It doesnt work (more preciesly: I couldnt dig the mesecons), so I looked at the Lua code a bit and fixed it.
I was quite disappointed (sorry Jeija), so I read through lua-api.txt and made my own electricity/logic mod (it was much faster than the mesecons mod of that time). I had a nice time playing arround with the API.
I told my friend about Minetest and we played a bit together on a private server.
After some weeks of not playing Minetest I came back, cloned the repo, compiled the latest dev version myself (that was something arround June 2012) and was really excited about the sounds. I have done some awesome castles in that time and played arround with mods.
In July 2012 I found the carts mod by xyz and it was a complete disaster. So I made my own carts mod in some hours and thought it would be a nice idea to release it in the forum. You can find it here:

Well, thats the story how I found out about Minetest, how I played a at the beginning and became a modder.
