FOSS gamedev and creative worlds

As newbie, I have learned how to use Minetest on my local machine, and would like to build a world with friends. I can't run a server locally, since I can't open up the port to the outside.

What's the quickest way to create a world on a server and invite my friends into it?

You could ask one of your friends whether they can host a server.
Or you could alternatively grab a cheap VPS from e.g. https://www.digitalocean.com/ and host the world there.
