Got an idea.
You could make a texture pack with the middle ages style. *looks at John Smith TP*
Or how about an (other) comic texture pack?

I would suggest you take a look at pixel art tutorials like http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/pixel-art-tutorials/
Also learn a little about color theory as a lot about what you learn about shading and geometry still applies in the digital world as it does in the canvas world. Start off making shapes. There are lots of tools you can find out there to draw with. Gimp might not be ideal for pixel are but it has a lot of other tools I liked using when I made textures for other games such as opacity and alpha transparency that I used in shaders and png art for websites. Gimp isn't too hard to get used to. The brush and pen tool let you used smaller size for 1 2 pixel sizes. It also has a decent smug tool to move the color around and fix edges. Just think of what you think would be really cool for have in the game that you think might be really cool to have and figure out how you could implement in the game using textures and lua. Since Minetest is open and free software the community doesn't mind you taking a look at each others code or reusing it so long as you follow the licensing for something released and give attributes to the people where it's due for their work.

See, if you want to do great content, i think is better start with the maps, when you know what are the nodes in Minetest, his properties and characteristics you get ideas for the texture pack, then start with mods, you know how to do textures for the nodes or the tools that you going to do in a mod!

Knowing about maps, you understand a bit more about the physics of some blocks, and will become easier understand some things, as the characteristics, or do physics!

Is an advice of someone that is around of the world, do whatever you want, only read this and keep in mind that when you know everything is easier make mods!

Start how you want!

Only is better know about Minetest, before doing tectures or mods!

Or better play more and learn some things about Minetest!

Do what you want!

Only keep in mind this little advice of someone around of the world...

Dude, this thread is 2 years old, he already chose what to do. He made this, and never heard of him ever since.
It's my fault your seeing this as an active topic, I accidentally necro-posted this thread while deleting some of my old posts.
