"Bad words" are only as bad as the intent behind them, and bad intent can be expressed using plenty of words which aren't "bad". I acknowledge that some people don't want to hear those particular collections of syllables so I avoid using them around those people, but I do think less of anyone who takes offence over silly things like word choice. I certainly don't intend to do anything to promote pointless taboos.

As for the topic of the thread, I'd support changing the quote simply because it doesn't represent the game as-is. If we can't come up with a good quote relating to the default minetest_game, then perhaps that indicates that more mods should be bundled with the engine.

Or maybe we just remove the quote altogether. Screenshots say more than a 1000 words.

+1 For a giantic amount of screenshots! Maybe from the ''Post your screenshots!'' topic?

A randomizer would be nice if we change it to screenshots

I have added a row of screenshots, but that is the maximum amount as we don't want it to get too clogged.

@rubenwardy: Could you make it so that the homepage shows real thumbnails instead, and those thumbnails link to the full size? This would solve the problem of long load times and would allow to post more screenshots. And why do you think that only 9 screenshots are already “clogging” the homepage? o_O

It is a well-known HTML sin to “resize” images by just changing the IMG attributes “height” and/or “width” in a way that they don’t actually match the real image size. On the homepage, I found this code:
Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
<img src="/_media/screen2.png?w=200" class="media" title="Desert Terrain" alt="Desert Terrain" width="200" />

This is the image this IMG element refers to: <http://minetest.net/_media/screen2.png?w=200>.
According to the IMG element, it should have a width of 200 pixels. Actually, it has a size of 1440 pixel × 851 pixel, forcing the browser to load the full image. This is a waste of bandwith and therefore a HTML sin.
So, actually <http://minetest.net/_media/screen2.png?w=200>, should be 200 pixels wide, not the full image.

The same HTML sin has been done on the “image info page”, the page you land on if you click the small image. Again, the full-blown image is loaded instead of a scaled down version.

PS: A link to the high-quality screenshot thread would be very nice, too. :)

It is the website software which is doing that. I don't think the thumbnail plugin is installed / activated.

so you don't have an automatic thumbnail creating robot - and?
you can not do it the old fashioned way?
you know, create a thumbnail version of your picture offline and have two sets of pictures uploaded - and then ... no I don't believe you don't know how to do that manually and hardcode the link, just as I don't believe the website wouldn't allow that ... actually I'm a little confused by that statement.

I don't expect any maintainer to manually produce thumbnails for every picture ever posted and I don't think anyone is paying him/her to do that either. PHP is able to do this but that again mean he would need to sit down and figure out a bug free solution if phpBB's features do not produce intended results.

The website is supposed to create thumbnails, and I didn't notice that it didn't.

I for one like both the quote and the image thumbnail ideas.

But since nobody else has proposed a single quote to use as an alternative, I'll list a few potential candidates that I found to be attention-grabbing:

"Watershed is a radical and stunning break from the typical mapgen that most Minetest players are accustomed to. Watershed embodies ''epic'." ~LazyJ, mod: Watershed

"Just the other evening, I was wandering through a dark cavern at about -500 level, looking for diamonds and mese, when I accidentally stepped off a ledge and fell down half a dozen nodes. The fall was not enough to kill me, but my heart started pounding fast as soon as I realized that I had fallen past the light radius of my last torch. I was in the dark, and the inky blackness around me was crawling with hostile aerial mobs!

Thank goodness for the Air Sword!!! I clicked mightily with it, and at every click an enemy mob died on its windy edge. I kept clicking and slaughtering the evil hoards until I finally made my way back into the blessed light of a lava lake, which (thank goodness!) banished the evil fiends. If it hadn't been for my trusty air sword, I never would have made it back alive." ~Kilarin, mod: airsword

"It's hard to describe how absolutely awe inspiring the views are when you are peaking over, under, and through floating islands. You can see the clouds drifting by far below, and see where islands cast shadows on each other." ~Kilarin, game: Sky-Test

I could probably find more, but those are just a few to get started.

Well, I'm flattered. But I suspect that an "Air Sword" quote on the main page might lead to some accusations of deliberately causing confusion? :D

Air Sword for the win!
but seeing what expectations the word "infinite" causes when used on the main page I guess the "Air Sword" should rather be kept a secret that the adepts only get knowledge of when accepted to the deeper magic of Minetest.
Then, maybe in some deep down chamber in the temple of mese someone might whisper into their ears the wondresssssss mystery of how to collect just the right quality of air and then another in some other hidden realm might give hints to find that well hidden tutorial world that teaches how to craft such a mighty weapon from the whisps of air that are so easily lost.

It DOES seem that a lot of people have trouble installing that mod. :D

So, I just coded a new feature into SkyLands... THE AIR SWORD. However, I haven't posted or uploaded it yet... Should I give the recipe for it when I post it, or should I instead make a change to CaveRealms that has the underworld cave fortresses have a sign in each that gives a random piece of the recipe for it?

Hi Everyone,

This thread sure shifted topic. Thought I'd weigh in with my two bob.

I don't think the swearing is nescessary but (as is currently the case) I don't think it should be censored either. If that's how you wish other people to perceive you then that should be your choice.

As proof that swearing is unnescessary - try telling some big bloke in a night club "I think you are a very silly man with a small mind and bad breath." I promise that will get your face flattened a lot faster than a dictionary full of swear words.

I like the idea of keeping the main entry to the site clean, there are children present.

As for the original topic - does it have to be quotes from members? I've seen a lot of real classics out there, usually attached to people's sigs in forums.

eg: This message was generated using 100% recycled electrons.

eg: Don't tell me the sky is the limit when there's foot prints on the moon.

Cheers,

Andrew.
