I noticed that player models are just 2D billboards. Can these be replaced with animated models? Which model formats are supported? MD2? MD3?

I know nothing about 3D modelling, but file /games/minetest_game/mods/default/models/charakter.x is 323kB big, it is a lot compared to textures etc...
It cannot be optimized or there will be no gain of doing that?

Are you looking for a skins mod?

What is the mod that adds the default player model? bones? Where are the animation frames handled?

The `default` mod (which is part of most subgames) provides the 3D look. The relevant code is in `default/player.lua`.
