i5 750 cpu, amd 5850 radeon gpu. Minetest runs at about 50-60 fps with default view distance and about 10-20 at max view distance. Is this good/bad? Can Minetest improve upon this?

Minetest can't do that. I can make a video proof if anyone want to )
Also, I do not need any posts, cause I own Pi and it goes up to AWESOME 5 fps! ))))))))
Or should it be "((((((((", cause most of time RPi can do only 0 fps running Minetest?
Minecraft runs full-speed and looks way better on the TV screen that Minetest.
Also, I saw video on Youtube about Minetest port for RPi but can't find any real version available for download.

Tried running minetest on a cubie truck. It runs lubuntu on a dual core ARMv7 with 2G RAM.
It installs OK form the package manager.
It runs at about 0.5 FPS, i.e. one frame every two seconds, but at least it runs.
Well, it was worth a try.

It should run better on a Cubietruck.
Are you sure you didn't use the software driver of Irrlicht?
You also probably need Irrlicht with ogl es support.

The lowest configuration I was able to play minetest is on my Asus Eee PC 701.
1 GB of Ram
630 Mhz ~ 900 Mhz (OC)
Intel GMA 945 (Im not sure if tis a 915 or 945)

It plays at 5 FPS with maximum viewing thing set to 20.

Debian Wheezy 7.3.
I believe it could run faster with Windows XP, due to better Intel Graphics Driver for XP. However, I'm not installing Windows!

You have intel drivers for Linux. I used it under xubuntu, and they rocked! It was better than the drivers I had on Windows because my games were faster, and yet better.

How about mobile devices? I'm astonished as to how well it runs on my phone. It's a rather cheap android one which was not bought for gaming performance.
1 GHz dual core
1 GB RAM (not really comparable to a PC)
Resolution: only 480x735 (that helps a bit as well :-))
view range: 20 (yes, that's not much)
fps: 24-30 (and that's really smooth :-))
A list of my mods can be found here.

Which phone is it? Phones have GPU too so it helps if you could either post your phone or the chipset it was based on or the GPU itself. The brand of CPU matters too. You won't get as many CPU features from an Allwinner as much as you can get from a Snapdragon.

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
Operating system: Windows XP Home Edition
Main memory: 1984 MB
Processor: 3.06 GHz
Graphic chip type: SiS 661 (internal)
Total graphic memory: 64.0 MB
OpenGL version: 1.4.0

Result in a world with 7 players, no mobs, no mesecons:

1 month ago, when I tried to switch from windows XP to Ubuntu LTS

Things which made me staying on windows XP and waiting until support runs out completely:
  • Only supported OpenGL 1.2 (instead of 1.4.0)
  • FPS were about 10-12 (instead of 18-26)
  • "xorg doesn't work", fq off, I don't need you, I only need a graphic driver!!
  • root password needed everytime, same as abrove, until now I had no need for a "root" thingy, so not in future
  • took me 2 hours to set up sound
  • I wouldn't be able anymore to program in .NET (C#) on LINUX/UNIX
  • "sudo apt-get install ..", wtf? no .exe or .msi? Damn, don't make my life harder than it already is!
  • "Graphic card driver: VISA"?! NO! It's supposed to be SiS661 FX/GX!!
  • total invested time: ~10 hours, reached: a multimedia system with crappy (crappier than on windows) gameplay

Seriously, no interest.

Windows: Congratulations! you just installed a computer eating virus! say good bye to this computer as we overide all setting and burn out the CPU!!!!!
(note: windows tried implementing a similar feature in vista. however, all the windows users raged at it)

linux: root password needed for virus to do any serious damage. your welcome.

help stop the windows plague. adjustment is minimal.

If you have enough harddrive space, you could laso run a dual boot with both windows and linux. Then you can still play those games ignorantly made for only Windows, and still bask in the freedom of open source software.

WHAT THE F**K DID YOU SMOKE? USING A PACKAGE MANAGER IS WAY MORE CONVENIENT THAN INSTALLING EVERYTHING WITH A DIFFERENT INSTALLER.

Krock, don't be overwhelmed. It might be crappy now, but after breaking your system a few times, you'll eventually get it.

KIDDING. lol. If you are careful with using sudo, nothing bad will happen. Use it for a week, and package management will come to you like walking to a two year old.

@sfan5: Xorg is explorer?!! Dafuq?! Is it not the display server?! Don't put wrong facts because they are easier to understand. Xorg is a display server. It puts your graphics on the screen. Nautilus is your explorer - It accesses your files.

Let's just go through the GUI way to manage packages first.

Krock, if the terminal way doesn't work it out, do this in a terminal:

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install synaptic

//The above installs the synaptic package manager
//Then,

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:minetestdevs/stable

//This will set up a ppa so that you can just type

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

to update minetest when a new stable is out. That ppa is for stable. If you want unstable, find it yourself =D

For now, type in
Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
and then press the SuperKey (Windows button), and then type Synaptic. Search for minetest, and then grab the latest from there.

If you want it via the terminal, which is easier,

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install minetestc55

If you are on a 64 bit, and want the 32 bit,(WARNING! 32 bit libraries broke my Xubuntu installation! Do the following at your own risk!)

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install minetestc55:i386

Try killing the explorer.exe process on windows and see what happens.

Yeah, but when I kill explorer.exe, the wallpaper is still there, and the mouse moves around too. One step away from display server, it is.

Thanks my friends for helping.

Just one little thing:

I can't get a "device manager" to reinstall my wlan card (because that sudo apt-get command doen't work anymore)
Yesteray it worked fine and and now I'm stuck while searching a manager or something-what-the-hell-i-dont-know-which-program to reinsall that hell-i-need-a-worse-word-to-describe this --

Err no thanks, I'm trying to not rage, which is very VERY hard at the moment.

EDIT2: removed the text from edit 1

If your wlan card doesn't work now, but it did in the past, try rebooting.

If you do not have an internet connection at all, apt-get install won't work at all. Try again after you connect via an Ethernet.

Can you accurately describe exactly what you need?
