Minetest Wiki Issues

Hi there, this is 4aiman.

I, like, '''realy''' hope this is being read by someone.

I'm going to tell everyone about this page.

I don't know where you (maintainers?) getting all those dates-of-release, but those are wrong.
At least for Magichet they are - the date's 31 March 2015.
The same goes for Minetest_defence: Kalabase updated that only 8 days ago!..

Thus, I suggest either updating this page or stating clearly in <span style="color:red">'''red'''</span> smth like: "This page may be outdated. Do not blame us - blame yourself or God".

Regards!

PS: The "choose the cats" script is still broken and I can't create a new account because of the fact it is.
I doubt I would change anything there aside from this page, so that "no registration" issue maybe justified.
(I know that Calinou can give access.)

That is pretty much entirely Twoelk's work.

Magichet: "The Open Tuesday Update"
by 4aiman ยป Thu Oct 30, 2014 4:40 pm

The topic was created then, which is why that's the release date.

Your first commit was on Apr 16, 2014. I've added a note saying that it's according to the forum topic.

Edit: you've misunderstood, it's date of release, hence first date, not last updated.

Indeed hardly anybody else contributes to that page and as such there may be several weeks and sometimes months between updates from me. You are desperately invited to help.

but

as Rubenwardy stated you totaly misunderstood the date.

It is the oldest date I could find that is related to the subgame. So if you sort by date you can find out how long a subgame has been around. Just as the wording FirstDate might hint. Btw the date is, if possible, retreaved from the forum but that is not the only source. Sometimes it is the date of the first entry at GitHub or any other place I could find information at.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to include the information that players are really interested in which would be
  • last release
  • works with which version of Minetest
  • includes which mobs
  • runs on which public server
  • size of game
  • all authors involved
  • complete list of mods inside

The probleme is these informations do change a lot, DreamBuilder even on an almost daily basis. I have not the time and resources to monitor all the games and update them each day. Therefore the list includes information that is fairly static and does not change that often once the game has an entry. Also a basic idea was to create a "sortable" list. For that to work I had to have columns that where filled with data, as empty fields in the wrong places would make this useless. That is why no columns are included where only some of the games yield some data.

As a sidenote, I had also built or edited the templates for the game-info-box. It also sported the "first creation" date but CraigyDavi has edited it to a "Latest Version" field. Needless to say that maintainance of that information does not work well and as such it is useless.

You may remember the MMDB. The idea was simple. Every mod author updates his entry every time he changes something in his mod. Guess what, it is a wonderfull idea but does not work well in reality. Most people are lazy and don't like to be bothered with such stuff as constantly having to update some remote databases as soon as they have coded something. That is one reason that most use GitHub. Most of these issues are solved automatically there.

So yes, the "List of Subgames" does not include all the information a player would really be interested in. The "List of Subgames" includes only information that is fairly static, is available for all entries and does not need more time to maintain than I can afford to offer. In other words, the list is indeed not a list of the most interesting data I could think of but rather a list of only that information that can be retrieved with an reasonable amount of work and which offers complete columns without any missing data.

but

after all it is a wiki

so help is very much appreciated

Oh... the first date...
Sorry, guys, the word "oldest" really confused me.

So... what about using some hacky java scripting?
That's entirely client-side and can retrieve almost any info from any web page there is.
I doubt one should let me edit any php scripts, but...

If I can help with some javascript coding (I have no idea how's that integrated in wiki) I'd be glad to help once I'll prepare the next Magichet release. (I DO know about https://developer.github.com/libraries/ but haven't touched ANY of those libs...)

Until then, regardless of the means to achieve the goal, it would be great to come to some kind of agreement.
More specifically: what should be on that page? (I'm all for the stuff you've mentioned, twoelk.)

Regards!

Good idea!
Most subgames has a repo at Github.
It would be great if there was a "lastest commit".
