Lost World - Hot Tip

by slopsbucket » Thu Jun 18, 2015 23:59

I finally started building something on a larger scale, too big to not use Creative mode. I've been a bit crook lately suffering a relapse of Ross River Virus, Australia's answer to Malaria. Except Malaria is for Christmas, Ross River is for life, bloody thing will keep coming back every couple of years until I'm dead. Not capable of doing much else so I thought I'd build a really big castle.

At about 11:30 last night while I was happily stacking blocks we had a power cut. Power came back on straight away, back in to Linux, start Minetest, open world 152, error message. Bugger! The mobs must have been having a private war because the error message said there was "no end of argument".

It was way past my bed time and my poor tired pain beleaguered brain refused to accept such a devastating loss. I opened the 152 world folder and started comparing the files in there with the files in a working world folder, just to see if I could spot any obvious differences – there were two.

map.sqlite.journal 11.3 kb didn't exist in other world folders so I shifted it out of there.

env_meta.txt 0 bytes in working maps this file is 50 bytes, not 0. So I deleted it and copied one in from a working map.

Voila! C'est tout bien!

Still a bit lame compared to some of the pictures I've seen in this forum but I like it.

Hope that helps someone.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Sounds like the main database was at least partly corrupted. map.sqlite is the file that contains the database which contains the map data.

Yes, that's happily something that can be repaired easily, and without real loss to the world (who really cares about which time it was last time you played?).

You're the final judge on your buildings - you have to like them :-) And it's not a bad castle. If you want to improve it further, you can always add more details. I usually go by looking at what the building is for - and what may be required due to that. Such a big castle ought to have something that helps to support those long and high walls, something that stabilizes them.

Thanks for the response Sokomine.

Still very much a work in progress, the main keep is still just an empty shell. Buttresses to come later, but I was proud of the breastwork under the balconies.

Sorry to hear you caught the Ross River virus bud i know someone who caught it and yeah not too pleasant at all.

On the lighter note nice castle mate, you could always build the old traditional moat and bridge with a gate as a feature :)

Oh yes! That looks very good. If the rest of the castle turns out that nice as well, it will be a work to behold. Please don't forget to post some more screenshots once you're done! And take your time so that it gets really nice, like those balconies :-)

Looks like it might end up being a little bigger than I'd planned.

Might have to move the outer walls a bit and chuck in extra towers, but that'll look funny because it's on top of a cliff 35 blocks above sea level. Sorry Dopium, no moat. May have to add some more land underneath it afterwards.

And check out the lighting in the main entry hall.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Now it looks more like a deposed despot's hacienda.

OK. There's just not enough space in that place on that map so I started a new one.

This time I made a much larger clearing at sea level so it looks like Dopium gets his mote after all.

Then I made the mistake of building bigger towers. No! No! No! Silly man. Keep the same proportions but spread over a larger area. Fortunately I've got one of those really sick brains that remembers numbers, patterns and sequences with impunity so this time around my build should go a little quicker.

Looks like I might have to go a larger area again now that I've started.

This is turning into a big project and I'm not even sick any more. Welcome to Minetest.

Nice work but you didn't have to start another build to make a moat for me lol. Either or you're a solid builder mate, great stuff

you're a solid builder mate,

Nah, I got sucked in. Once I'd started it sort of became important to get it right.

I think it's going to work this time.

And I just discovered flying. Doesn't that make life easier!

Learning to fly has sped things up like you wouldn't believe. In just a few hours I got most of the buttressing done, started putting floors inside and started on another level. Still going to take a while to finish though. Maybe when it's done I should put it in the Maps forum for someone else to do the interior decoration.

OK. It's done. Finished.

And I'm finished with Minetest for a while now too. Have to play something else so that I stop neglecting my garden.

Image

I'm trying to upload it to the Maps forum at the moment but I have the world's most useless service provider, best I've managed to send in one go is about 300 Kb.

It's now posted in the Maps forum under Big Castle if you want to take a proper look. Only 7.5 Mb.

Cheers,

Andrew.
