How unfotunate - server owners as grievers

I now know why I saw one member post that he had quit minetest because he was disappointed in the community. When server owners, who by the way have posted in here themselves about being grieved, enter other servers and themselves become the grievers, I can so completely understand where that individual is coming from. Very disappointing indeed. I just recently started a server for fun and already the fun is going away fast. My server is CreativePlace and if that server owner reads this they will know I am talking about them probably. Names will not be mentioned at this time. But yes I know who you are. I work in the computer industry and know how to track these things, no matter what name you chose at the time. Twice even ---- the ip address didn't change enough to hide you. If it becomes necessary to turn off interaction by default because of community members like this then the game becomes totally useless. It is members like this that will completely kill the minetest game in the end. Tooo sad. I hope this is not the norm of the community. I had planned to try to learn about the mods and hopefully contribute. If this is what to expect I may not want to waste my time.

Because it is so easy to create a server, we end up with issues like this. I suggest trying a bigger, more permantent server such as Vanessa's.

So other server owners coming in and being grievers on my server is my servers fault? Hmmm, interesting concept there. Vanessa has interact off by default. That was the point I was making. I believe requiring that to be off by default pretty much defeats the purpose of the game. Especially a creative server.

maybe the server owners want to make their own servers more popular by sabotaging the other servers.

You need to ask for interact. It prevents griefers, at least partially.

Edit: i misread. I think you'll find that the other server owners aren't coming on your server, it's imposters. To stop griefing:

Don't give interact by default, ask players to ask for it
Install a protection mod.
Disable fire/lava/lava buckets
Have active moderation that rollbacks griefing.

Turning interact off by default is like a register function on a website. You want the player to give you an email address to authenticate against, or a forum account. Or you want an ingame chat to make sure they understand the rules. The redcrab server uses an automated email register system. If you have other good anti-griefing mechanisms then you don't need to disallow by default.

Multiplayer isn't the community or the game. It's dominated by players using illegal android apps. I haven't played multiplayer in several years.

Could be imposters true - I myself am newer at the server and learning as I go. Have learned a lot fast but now have spent too much time cleaning the messes. As far as other suggestions, only have so much time to spend online with this. Bills need to be paid. Maybe was a bad idea to try. Oh well,,,,movin on. Will see what happens over the next week or so and decide from there.

Appreciate the replies and suggestions all.

Thanks.

The new CreativePlaceLocked has been up and running for a reasonable time now. So far so good. I would like to thank those of you with suggestions on improving it. Measures were taken to try to minimize the griefing and it seems to have worked for the most part. The little that still occurs seems to be easily cleaned at the moment. Thanks also to the lua coders that allowed me to set up some of the protection options. You guys rock. Thanks again, stop in some time.

Glad it worked out for you. The community in general are great people. Please don't confuse the community with the players. If you have any questions please ask and someone will help.

This is the internet - always assume the worst. If it can be griefed, it will. I think this thread is a bit of an over reaction, but I'm glad you figured out how to protect your server.

Sad. :( I don't think the interaction request is necessary, but disable other privs and let the players show good behavior for a while before upgrading them. LinuxGaming2.com server is great example of this - very very few griefers. Of course, protection mods are a necessity.
