A New Wiki...

So I finally got around to finishing up the wiki I made a while ago:

http://wiki.minetest.com

I personally don't like the official one much, so I made my own ^-^

Right now most stuff is up, except all the individual item/block and the crafting/furnace pages. I will do those soon. The majority of content up there right now is paraphrased from the 'official' wiki and I have added/streamlined things where necessary.

IMO individual mods shouldn't be listed on the wiki (there will likely be exceptions, but in general we should keep them on the forum) as it will just lead to a lot of clutter very quickly.

The front page still needs work, feel free to change it up as you see fit, ideally we want to have links to all the information people need right on there.

Also uploading pictures should work now if you are a registered user (if you're registered but can't edit pages/upload files then you need to verify your email address), it was disabled before.

I was thinking of keeping all the development stuff off this one, and just direct them to celeron's wiki, but I may change that depending on what you guys think.

Registration is open to everyone! Just make sure you verify your email address in order to upload images and edit pages. You can register here: http://wiki.minetest.com/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin&type=signup

Let me know what you think and any suggestions you have! :)

Sax

Thanks guys!

The crafting stuff still needs a ton of work, but I think I'm starting to figure that out too.

Sorry that I locked you out of editing the crafting page SelfishCar! :( I just needed to get the page sorted out with the templates and stuff and with 2 people editing it at the same time it kept deleting everything I had done.

Really need you guy's help with the individual item/block pages though. The descriptions are really lacking. Also if you want to write up some tutorials or something you are more than welcome to, we really need more stuff to appeal to people that don't play (yet :D).

Also I hope celeron doesn't mind the little biography page I made for him :P

Let me know if you need help with anything on the wiki

Sax :)

Nah, it's OK!
I will help you out with the block/item pages. Clean it up... ;)

BTW. Don't you think that Celeron should add emotions and smileys to the forum? (Of-topic)

Let me suggest a scheme here: My wiki will stay as the development / configuration reference for knowledgeable people / stufflikethat wiki, and your wiki will contain the game content, tutorials, more freeform mod listings and stuff like that.

If this is fine, I hope your wiki will have a practically infinite lifespan, so that we don't need to be switching wikis all the time.

Sounds good! That's pretty much the way I have it set up right now.

Also the wiki will be around forever as far as I'm concerned, so you will never need to switch again.

Not sure how you want to label the different wikis on the main website, maybe label this one as the 'main' wiki and the old one as 'dev' wiki? There should probably also be a link from the dev wiki to this one, I would do it myself but I don't believe I am able to edit the main page on the wiki.

I'll arrange the links somehow in the near future and call my wiki the "dev wiki", or something like that. I am a bit hesitant in calling your wiki "the minetest wiki"; but I hope I can trust in you enough. It's hard to guess who to trust when there is no money involved. :P

EDIT: I will probably link directly to your wiki from the navigation links of the main page, and your responsibility is to add a well visible link to point to the dev wiki.

That works fine for me! Is the way it's set up now alright with you? With the "Development resources" on the main page with a link there?

I understand that you would be hesitant, if you'd like to make an account on there I can make you an admin (sysop - all privileges). Just so that you feel you have some control at least :)

@Saxony: I really love the minetest.com wiki and you do a good job reviewing all the TPs and Mods. Another thing I noticed about minetest.com... Sorry, but it looks a little unfinished yet.
It's just the way the website is designed: These coloured bars don't really fit the game.
Instead of the heading "Minetest", put the logo of minetest up there and write "Minetest" in another font.
Another idea: put some pictures in main site: "What is minetest?"
If you still got some time left ;) you may even create a custom design for the website (darker).

I hope you don't feel attacked, I'd just like to help improve the website with my proposals.

There are still too many errors in the wiki to my liking. A lot of
information, but many of it is wrong, like:
- the finnish IRC channel (there is no server called ircnet.net)
- linux installation of mods
- the texture packs page is just... well, even i don't understand it; also i know that installing texture packs is horribly supported currently. I'll try to fix it ASAP.
- you have mixed up the information of 0.3 and 0.4 too much; it should be made clear which applies to which, because they are so different and new people don't know it.

Let's just take our time to get it to a good level of quality before calling it official.

On for example, the MESE page, can I change the info on that so it also says it can be crafted into Mesecons?

So, you could like, write down which mods each block supports...
That would be cool!

BTW. I'm never editing The Wikia-page anymore. We won't need 2 wikis!

Changed it to IRCnet.
Seems like no one can agree on how you install linux mods :P. I've updated it to be as accurate as I can make it, hopefully someone who actually uses linux can flesh it out.
Redid the texture pack page, it was very hard to understand, hopefully better now?
I plan on making a 0.4 page with all the new features that have been added, so people don't get confused. For the tutorial pages I've added 0.4 and 0.3 sections. These are going to be kinda funky until the official 0.4 release though because of how many different variations there are in what you do for the different dev builds.

Also SelfishCar yes you can, mesecons really needs a wiki page.
btw you don't need to ask me, you can just go ahead and do it :P

I agree completely, minetest.com is technically unfinished. I really need to rework the look of the site entirely, it's far too thrown together for my tastes. Will probably be a bit before I do that though as I'm busy with a lot of stuff right now.

Just for you Jeija, I redid all the nasty colored bars in a more minetest-y theme :)

Site is still unfinished, I want to redesign the whole site sometime in the future with some added functionality, but until I have time to do that I think it will suffice now.

Let me know what you guys think!

Also both the Wiki and Minetest.com both have different icons from Minetest.net so you do not get them mixed up in your tab bar anymore :)
