yeah, but in the the settings of minetest there is "path for mainmenu script". what is this?

Copy and paste the directory builtin\mainmenu to another location and make the minetest.conf setting point on the init.lua file inside. Then you can change the mainmenu scripts at the new location. Quite useless setting IMO.

I suspect it's for developers.

So you can more easily switch between menu sets when doing dev work, which is better than swapping folders in and out and squashing files with unsaved buffers.

probably. i thought it would make us able to add things like music to the menu.

I haven't tested but maybe menu sound would indeed be possible - use a stereo track to make it play regardless of distances etc in-game so why not in the menu....

simply create a folder called minetest/sounds in the root directory of minetest and add a file called main_menu.ogg.
Now open the main menu and enjoy the music. This has been possible for quite a while now.
