Pet Peeves

Singleplayer
I've heard it said that there is no technical difference between singleplayer mode and multiplayer mode, but I find this not to be so, for a number of reasons. My runfast mod doesn't work properly in singleplayer, for example. A modding error, perhaps, but a good illustration nonetheless. <-- Definitely a modding error.

The biggest issue I take with this is that the player's name is "singleplayer". Just because it's a single player mode, doesn't mean that single player doesn't have a name. "Owned by singleplayer" <-- That one hurts.

Unbindable keys
I have been playing first person games since 1993, and for as long as I've been using the mouse (1994), and for as long as jumping has been available (1995), I have used the second mouse button for jumping. I know space is a pretty obvious default, and that many people use and prefer it. But I don't.

I think I just needed to vent. Thanks for minetest!

PS. I realize these two points have been brought up before, and that this post may be in duplicate; but feel free to post your own pet peeves anyway, please.

When I click on the text in a sign and it selects half the message instantly.
No controller support. (Really? REALLY?)
I want singleplayer names as well.

I have to back you up on the name Singleplayer. If a player proudly builds something and places a sign, they should have their preferred gamertag. Worlds created offline by Singleplayer then shared as a server yield locked doors owned by Singleplayer. Singleplayer may not log into a running server to open them. I wish all "offline" instances of a game were run as a server is. As they really are a server without the address reachable from a network.
Some computer users share a login. So each person that played Minetest on that machine would have to be Singleplayer. Yuck.

I agree with both points.

My annoyances with Minetest:

Far too many “gotchas” with accounts and logins:
- You automatically and without notice create an account if you ever login the first time on a server with name+password. The “confirmation” is implicitly stated in the fact that you joined the server. Good luck in remembering that password in the 2nd login if you didn't know of this very sneaky practice
- Account creation and login look exactly the same. The common practice of entering a password twice (to avoid typos) in account creation is not followed
- Poor/incomplete error messages
- These gotchas probably cause many good player names to be lost forever :-(

Usability and in-game documentation are topics which are largely ignored by the community at large. This makes it hard to attract new players, especially those who are completely new to the genre.

I dislike the crafting system and think it is flawed by design: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15353

Game controls are a gigantic mess. It's not just that you can't bind all keys. I have opened an entire thread about this: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9505

EDIT: No engine support for translating mods.
