Rui, that's a beautiful dungeon slice screenshot.

Hybrid Dog > why did the flower generate on air
Probably caused by a nearby cave from a neighbouring mapchunk removing the ground from under it.

12Me12 > More squares
In 0.4.12 dev those have been replaced by 'blob ore' which uses 3D noise for a deformed spherical shape.

Does this exist in real nature too?

It sure can. If there is an eddy in the upstream part of that circle, it can carve away until it eventually connects. Not uncommon at all in faster moving water in higher elevation terrain.

But the water isn't moving, though. It's all the same height, not flowing, and it connects with an ocean, also at the same height.

Also, rivers don't seem to branch at all in minetest, I've followed the river for hours and haven't seen any branches or other rivers.

Good points. But going only by the screenshots, I wouldn't think that view could not occur in nature. As far as flowing is concerned. We have to remeber that in nature that water can flow, even swiftly. And the terrain can appear quite flat. To create the flowing illusion in Minetest would involve many 1 meter drops in elevation. Any river of length would look ridiculous within a couple map chunks.

ln my opinion water in minetest should at least flow through fences.

^ Poor stupid mobs.

> ok, and why do usual dirt and trees sometimes generate in the nyanland?

Because nyanland is used in mgv6 and mgv6 has a glitch where dirt and trees are sometimes added to lua mapgens, it's something that happened a lot in my early mapgens.

> But the water isn't moving, though. It's all the same height, not flowing, and it connects with an ocean, also at the same height.

True, but this is a simple mapgen that doesn't vary river height (mine do), and Minetest is not meant to be realstic or 'real-world logical', there are a million other aspects that do not make sense in a real world. All that matters is it looks cool.
I might be able to vary river height a little dependant on base terrain height, but of course that will result in rivers going uphill and downhill in a certain direction.

> Also, rivers don't seem to branch at all in minetest, I've followed the river for hours and haven't seen any branches or other rivers.

There are 4-way junctions, usually leading to loops, but never 3-way. The structure is a result of the use of 2D noise, the river follows curves of zero-value noise, very much like the contour lines on a map.

it goes around and looks like a castle moat.. nice base for a watchtower or so...

This looks like an early 0.2 version. Are you running it with an Windows emulator?

April fools!

by Wuzzy » Wed Apr 01, 2015 18:08

EDIT: April fools!
This “subgame” I am talking about is made up. This image is actually a screenshot from Terasology, with the text “Minetest 0.4.12” added to make it more believable. :P

Original post:

Sneak peek on a new subgame I've been working on (HIGHLY EXPERIMENTAL):

Image

It is quite amazing what you can do with L-system trees, skyboxes and nice texture packs.

It's Minetest-c55 NMPR - New MultiPlayer Release. It's the first version of minetest with multiplayer support. I'm running it in WINE because I couldn't get it to build.

How did you make these black lines around the nodes?

April fool I guess, looks a lot like http://terasology.org

BTW: terasology's trees use the L-system and so maybe they can easily be implemented into a minetest mod

Muhahaha, Hybrid Dog got April-fooled by my image.
Yes, this image is not from my subgame. I made that up.
Actually I took a screenshot from Terasology. And then I added “Minetest 0.4.12” to the top left corner to make it more believable. :-)
